The Race (Isaac Bell Series #4) by Clive Cussler, Justin Scott

20th century detective Isaac Bell protects a promising aviator from her jealous husband in this remarkable adventure from #1 New York Times-bestselling author Clive Cussler.

It is 1910, the age of flying machines is still in its infancy, and newspaper publisher Preston Whiteway is offering $50,000 for the first daring aviator to cross America in less than fifty days. He is even sponsoring one of the prime candidates-an intrepid woman named Josephine Frost-and that's where Bell, chief investigator for the Van Dorn Detective Agency, comes in.

Frost's violent-tempered husband has just killed her lover and tried to kill her, and he is bound to make another attempt. Bell has tangled with Harry Frost before; he knows that the man has made his millions leading gangs of thieves, murderers, and thugs in every city across the country. He also knows Frost won’t be after just his wife, but after Whiteway as well. And if Bell takes the case . . . Frost will be after him, too.

After having read the first 3 Isaac Bell series, which were fantastic-they grabbed you from the 1st page, this one #4 is quite a letdown. I've been waiting for months for its release. It was Very, very boring from beginning to end. I have read every previous Clive Cussler book ever published & they have all been wonderful!!! Not so this one. Boring!

I haven't quite finished the latest Isaac Bell venture, but I am so loving it. The historical aspect is particularly intriguing, and the return to one of my favorite Cussler characters is a joy. The plot is developing very nicely, and I can't wait to reach the inevitably fascinating conclusion. A must-read for airplane buffs.

The sequel to the other three Clive Cussler books is quite a disappointment for me because all the other ones were smash hits while this one is just plain boring. Seriously? Cussler could have done much better knowing he produced a LOT of good ones, I really hope the next one would be much more okay.

I have read every book written by Cussler. I am very disappointed in this one. The first half of the book was very slow. I almost decided not to finish it but I had to finish it. The second part around page 200 really started to pick up. BTW The term is not JURY RIGGED. It is JERRY RIGGED. I am so tired of people and the ignorance of the English language in this country.

Not as intriguing as Cusslers many other books but with a new co-writer, Justin Scott. I am not finished with this one.

Bought the paperback in 2012, and the audio in 2013, and reread it every year or so. Guilty of adoring anything Cussler, and totally admiring Isaac Bell, but it is the story itself that keeps me coming back. Long ago, I checked up on Cussler's background facts and was satisfied that the historical researches are solid background for the fictional protagonists and the imaginative stories themselves. Isaac works for the Van Dorn Detective Agency (We never give up. Never), and not only investigates the sabotage interfering with this epic air race (across the US) and murders along the way, but also learns to fly planes as avant garde as his automobiles (Cussler is noted for his vintage auto collection). Fast paced and totally absorbing, this one will keep your nose glued to the page. Scott Brick gives his usual stellar audio performance.
