A solid reading which never quite achieves full ignition like the top versions. Gergiev’s tendency to fuss over matters of phrasing, rubato, dynamics, etc. periodically impedes the momentum thus compromising the full impact of Rachmaninoff’s greatest symphonic argument. The sound (derived from a 1993 Philips master) is generally good yet marginally opaque. Well written, informative liner notes.
