A must read for anyone wanting to take charge of their health! This book written by Dr. Speroni will be on my list of reference books for a lifetime. It is well written with facts verses opinions in which I appreciate. In the world of the ever evolving science of health I myself find it difficult to wade my way through the numerous differing opinions, but with his book I am able to make precise decisions in the best interest of my health more easily. This book is a must read for all who plan to take responsibility for their own health.
I write with great enthusiasm about Dr. Anthony Speroni's book, Radical Self-Defense. This book addresses the complex area of oxidative stress (commonly known as free radical damage), its pathogenesis, and potential treatments and interventions. This substantial treatment very capably fills the gap between marketing messages promulgated by supplement companies and highly technical academic articles on metabolites of oxidative stress and other disease processes. This book respects the complexity of its topic while making it eminently readable for the non-expert. The book does a great job of identifying the many links between oxidative stress as a process and multiple disease states, from neuro-degenerative disease, heart disease and many cancers. Clearly, as a phenomenon that has a nexus with the major causes of death throughout the world, oxidative stress needs to be understood beyond Welches grape juice and dark chocolate. Dr. Speroni also identifies what practices are proven effective in reducing oxidative stress and debunks others. Again, while he relies on the most recent studies to support his claims, he discusses interventions in a clear manner that anyone can understand. Finally, I appreciate the fact that this book talks about how to measure oxidative stress levels. In this evolving world of personalized health (and personalized outcomes), there is nothing like concrete validation to encourage individuals to stick with a regimen. Dr. Speroni identifies inexpensive ways to measure one's progress along the way. This is an important book. It can be used as a professional reference manual, a resource for a health-conscious individual, or a tremendous teaching tool for a health practitioner. It is all the better based on the fact that the remedies recommended by Dr. Speroni are all natural and easily obtained. I strongly recommend this book. David Urman
