Radical Well-Being: A Biblical Guide to Overcoming Pain, Illness, and Addictions by Rita Hancock

What’s blocking you from experiencing total wellness?
Research increasingly shows a strong connection between our spiritual life, our emotions, and our physical well being. Yet too often our physical conditions are treated without taking our whole lives into account.  In Radical Well-being, Dr. Rita Hancock shows you how your mind, body, and spirit are connected and addresses the factors that can contribute, and even cause, illness, addictions, and chronic pain.

If you suffer from medical conditions like fibromyalgia, migraine headaches, neck or back pain, irritable bowel syndrome, jaw pain, food and drug allergies, depression, anxiety, or unwanted behaviors such as overeating, an eating disorder, overspending, drug abuse or alcoholism, Radical Well-being will show you a biblical, whole-body approach to overcoming your condition. With nearly twenty years of experience counseling patients from a balanced, mind/body/Holy Spirit perspective, Dr. Rita gives you practical nuts-and-bolts advice, including how to:

·           Identify the lies that are manipulating you from a subconscious level
·           Deal with emotional factors that can make your pain seem worse
·           Address addictive behaviors that you want to get rid of
·           Fully accept God's love and forgiveness on a deep, healing level
True freedom and improved health come when deeply-rooted lies are illuminated and replaced with knowledge from the merciful heart of God. Radical Well-being will help you feel better in all three domains--in your mind, body, and in your spirit. You will end up feeling the way one of Dr. Rita's patients put it: "Like the weight of a skyscraper has been lifted off my shoulders."

I was privileged to receive an advance copy of this book from the author. I believe this is a positive approach to the nuts and bolts of love and healing by finding our inner spirit with the help of God and His infinite love. I love how the author skillfully puts action points in the book with questions to ask God as we kneel in prayer. We need to ask questions if we are to learn why we reach for false comfort in things and the wrong kind of people. There is no better source than God, who can show us the truth, give us hope and guidance on how to successfully live our lives in a constructive and happy way. Feeling pain, guilt or remorse can cause each of us emotional and physical illness. I think "Radical Well-Being" is a great guide that will help us learn how to live one day at a time happier, healthier, stronger, sharper and better by the power or God's healing love. I'll be honest. When I first began reading, I wasn't too sure about this doctor's approach to healing. Connecting the spiritual, physical, and mental to achieve healing of, say, migraine headaches seemed optimistic and simplistic. I was raised to believe doctors were the answer--they knew everything about the body and how to heal it. I looked on doctors with almost hero worship. Years later I became a Christian, and I found out firsthand that sometimes God heals supernaturally with no help from doctors. Again, hero worship, this time of One who deserved worship. However, it never occurred to me to connect abuse as a child with migraine headaches. In this case Dr. Hancock made a believer of me. She takes this book through cure after documented cure to demonstrate her points; the more I read, the more I nodded in agreement. I think if you read her book, you will concur. I give this book and this author a four-and-a-half thumbs up. (Don't ask where I got the extra thumbs...)

I also received an advance copy of this book for my personal opinion. The introduction starts right off with a punch that had me saying, "Wow". When reading Dr. Hancock's words I felt as though I were sitting down with her for a one-one-one talk. This book is well written and engaging. "Dr. Rita's" patient studies help illustrate what she is trying to get across to us, negative energy, memories and thoughts can and do impacts our chances to lose weight, fight pain or depression and so much more. She is trying to guide us to let go of the negative and seek out God as we fight the battle to attain better health and well-being. I know that stress is a major problem today and I can think of several people who cold benefit from this book. Dr. Hancock offers a very frank and engaging book that could help many readers.

As someone who's battled chronic pain, I was eager to read this book. Initially I was intrigued, and a little skeptical of the "biblical guide" claim in the title. Would the author recommend returning to Old Testament dietary laws? Would she insist the pain is "in your head," and you just need to pray more? Maybe she would decree the presence of pain is due to a lack of faith. What a thrill to discover the book is none of those things! The author presents compelling evidence of the mind/body/spirit connection in an engaging and friendly manner. Her sense of humor and deep love for others is evidenced in numerous composite stories sprinkled throughout the book. It is largely those stories and the author's warm tone that change this book from a typical self-help guide into an interesting and personal conversation. Dr. Rita (as she calls herself) challenges readers to discover and address the deep, underlying issues that may be triggering addictions and chronic pain. While she spends a considerable amount of time discussing the effects of stress on our bodies, she is careful to note that not all pain, illness, and addictions are caused by unmanaged stress or other emotional difficulties. Readers are gently taught to see themselves through God's eyes, reach out to Him through prayer, and take control of their thought life. The last part of the book addresses Inner Healing counseling. If you are among the millions battling addictions or chronic pain caused in part by emotional or spiritual difficulties, Radical Well-being will take you on an incredible journey of self discovery and healing. I highly recommend this book!
