Overview

Presenting some 200 excerpts of political pamphlets, novels, and other early 19th-century writing, Gleadle (London Guildhall U., UK) bases her selection of material on the presence of self-conscious and deliberate attempts to alter the balance of power between the sexes. Her goal is to provide a picture of "feminist" thought that testifies to the mutability and variety of discussion. Readings are organized into sections that address the general societal status of women, education, employment, domesticity and motherhood, marriage reform, divorce and sexual radicalism, female sexuality and the female body, and political rights and public power. Also included is an appendix that presents biographical information on most of the included writers. Annotation c. Book News, Inc.,Portland, OR
