Sitar features one piece, the "Raga Jaijaiwanti." You may find the alap (the slow first movement of a raga) a little draggy, especially the first section, which has no rhythm. But by the time you get to the jor (or jod) section of the alap with its two-step beat, you start to get drawn in. On Sharmistha Sen's "Jaijaiwanti," you may have to wait until the jhala (the fast section of the slow movement) before you feel a heartbeat, but even then it's a faint one. You can say this for her, though, Sen has very nice glides and dissonant note clusters. These, finally, may save the jhala for you. The second movement of a raga is where the tabla enters. Manoj Kumar Nagar provides fluid percussive support with lots of runs. His performance is the highlight of the second movement, which is otherwise somewhat commonplace except for the climax. The third, fast movement is very well played and fairly interesting. On the whole, the music-making in this CD is competent but not terribly exciting.
