About the Author

JANET LAWLER a critically acclaimed children's books author, has written 11 picture books for young children, inlcuding National Geographic Kids Ocean Counting featuring undersea photographs by award-winning photo journalist Brian Skerry. Lawler's love of family, nature, and "all things silly" inspires much of her writing. She enjoys visiting schools and libraries. TIM LAMAN is a contributing photographer to National Geographic magazine, a research associate in Ornithology at the Harvard Museum of Comparative Zoology, and a Fellow at the International League of Conservation Photographers. He is also a field biologist and wildlife photojournalist. Laman has pursued his passion for exploring wild places and documenting little-known and endangered wildlife for National Geographic. Laman has also developed a reputation for being able to come back with shots of nearly impossible subjects like gliding animals in Borneo, displaying Birds of Paradise, and some of the most critically endangered birds in the world.

Stunning animal photos introduce children to 10 basic colors in this latest from National Geographic Kids. From the brilliant blue Ulysses butterfly and yellow orb weaver spider to the scarlet ibis and purple honeycreeper, the colors of these animals are never in doubt, and the photos get readers so close that the scales on the iguana are visible, as are the hairs and bumps on the fiddler crab. Highlighting animals found in the rain forest, each spread features a single creature, its color in a large and matching type at the top, the animal's name below in the same color along with a brief paragraph that gives a few facts and asks a question of readers (which it then answers): "What do you think the cockatoo is doing?"
