Beautiful, impoverished Fanny Brightwell has a few scores to settle-and a heart to win-before she can secure the wealthy, aristocratic husband her ambitious mama demands.
Fanny is used to trading on her wits and beauty to ensure her family retains its tenuous hold on respectability. While her reprobate brother gambles away their fortune, and her feather-brained sister threatens to destroy the girls' collective reputation by succumbing to any lure cast her way, Fanny is regarded as the Brightwell family's saviour.
Pressured by her mother into accepting a marriage offer from lecherous Lord Slyther, a desperately unhappy Fanny is given one final opportunity to withdraw from her nuptials, provided she secures an equally rich and titled suitor within two weeks. Otherwise she can look forward to a lifetime attending to Great Aunt Seraphina's chilblains.
This is the story of Fanny's perilous gamble amidst a London season's offerings of debutantes with far greater address - but far less cunning - for the ultimate prize: dashing, delicious, daring Lord Fenton.

Rake's Honour by Beverley Oakley is an entertaining historical romance. This is a fairly quick read, perfect for those with limited reading time. Ms. Oakley has delivered a well-written book. The characters are varied, some you love, some you hate and some you want to shake some sense into. Fanny and Fenton's story is full of drama, humor and sizzle. I enjoyed reading Rake's Honour and look forward to reading more from Beverley Oakley in the future. Rake's Honour is book 1 of the Scandalous Miss Brightwell Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger. I voluntarily read a complimentary copy of this book that I received from Instafreebie.
This historical romance is about the Brightwell family after their father gambled away all the money then killed himself. The mother is a somewhat hard woman who is selling her oldest daughter to Lord Slyster a fat, lecherous old pig with boils on his legs and weeping sores. He thinks he’s quite the catch. The family is destitute and the son isn’t helping anything with his own gambling. Miss Brightwell (Fanny) talked her mother into letting her try to get Lord Alverson but she is disappointed when while they are in costume and mask at Covent Gardens he tells her he can’t marry her because he is promised to another. What a cad! He tells her he wants just one last kiss but she denies him and try to get away when she falls but is caught by a man in a pirate costume. He picks her up and carries her off to a water taxi. During the ride he makes improper advances and though she tries to put him off she is quite taken with him. He doesn’t think she’s an innocent so he puts the moves on her. They don’t exchange names when they land and she takes hackney home. He thinks about her continuously until he finds her at a ball where he manages to compromise her and take her virginity. He declares himself in love but he starts hearing things about her that makes him think he should offer her the position of mistress instead of wife. This was an interesting story although I wanted to box his ears several times but it does eventually end happily. Very enjoyable reading.
You are now on my list of good writers. This is for Adults and thats what I am. And I read close to 900 books. For this is my hobby and I love giving reviews. A young miss with a less than pleasant mother, must marrry a lecherous and gouty old man unless she can secure the affections and an offer of marriage from a young man more to her liking. Not easily done if the young miss is penniless and her family's reputation is dicey. Enter a handsome rogue interested in introducing the young lady to lustful pleasures without benefit of marriage and watch her dilemma increase tenfold! Rake's Honor is a sexy romp that is well-paced and features an interesting cast of supporting characters, as well as a rakish hero that you'd like to kiss one moment and slap the next. Steamy scenes and a great 'woman on the verge of jeopardy' plot make this a page-turner that will give you a vested interest in Fanny Brightwell and her quest for happiness sans gouty old reprobate.
