Overview

In the time it took her to release her first three proper albums, Sarah McLachlan put out nearly as much music as B-sides, singles, or stray tracks for compilations and soundtracks, leaving no easy job for fans wanting her entire output. Rarities, B-Sides & Other Stuff collects 13 of these non-album tracks, including "I Will Remember You" from the Brothers McMullen soundtrack, "Dear God," the song she contributed to an XTC tribute album, a cover of Joni Mitchell's "Blue," and several remixes. While this by no means empties the vaults or even collects all the necessary B-sides (her spot-on version of Peter Gabriel's "Solsbury Hill," for instance, is not included), Rarities' focus on remixes does, in the end, provide an interesting and highly listenable alternate view of the artist.

Okay, here it is: I love the music to "Dear God." It is an offensive song to Christians, so you may not like it if you're a strong believer. The song is a remake of XTC's "Dear God." The music is so good on this song, that I believe she could have had one of her biggest hits yet if she would have written her own lyrics about something else. The music is that incredible, as are the flow of the words. But then, we all know Sarah can sing almost better than anyone, if not better than anyone. I also liked the remix of "Fear." It's very long, over six minutes. I liked "I Will Remember You," of course. "Full of Grace" is great, as always. You can find the last two songs I mentioned on her "Mirrorball" CD. Get the complete concert, which has two CDs and a white cover. I'm really not into remixes, so I didn't really care for any of the other songs. And if "Dear God" wasn't so good, I probably would have given this one star. Remember, "Dear God" is a song about someone saying they don't believe in God. The writer of this song, Andy Partridge, is playing with your head: someone is talking to God, yet saying they don't believe in him.
