Ravenspeak is an extraordinary book written by Diane Lee Wilson. It takes place in a small Viking village during a very harsh and long winter. The inhabitants of the village are surviving on nothing, there is no food, and the water supplies are getting smaller. All the men capable of surviving a storm out at sea have left in search of food; one of those men is the village chief. Asa Coppermane, daughter of the Viking chief must protect the village from Jorgen, the village’s scald’s hunger for power during the absence of her father. When Jorgen decides to sacrifice Asa’s horse, Rune, to appease the gods and to provide food, she and her horse flee and find shelter in a strange old woman’s house who keeps two ravens for company. She tells Asa that she must make a sacrifice to protect her village from Jorgen and the winter. She must uncover the secrets of the Ravenspeak… I strongly suggest this book to anyone who likes historical fiction and Vikings. It is action packed and full of adventure and suspense. It is well written and has a great, but vague, setting and a great plot. The protagonist really matures from the beginning to the end of the book and learns a very important lesson in life. Anyone that enjoys a short and intense read should read this book
