Overview

RAY OF LIGHT has been hailed as Madonna's foray into electronica. This overlooks her collaboration with Nellee Hooper and Björk on the title track from BEDTIME STORIES, but never mind; it's good hype, and the album is worthy of some level of fuss. Although she first sought Prodigy's Liam Howlett, Madonna ended up collaborating with William Orbit, whose light, intricately detailed, sonic textures are a perfect foil for her new and improved singing (those voice lessons for "Evita" really paid off). Lyrically, Madonna deals with the two biggest changes in her life -- motherhood and her spiritual awakening -- and "Drowned World/Substitute for Love" and "Swim" are two of the prettier songs in her entire repertoire. Although things get a little heavy-handed at times (did we really need a pumped version of the Hindu chant "Om Shanti"?), the album marks a sea change in her presentation, with the anger and defiance of her best work replaced by genuine warmth. Still, Madonna is capable of building on past strengths, and "Nothing Really Matters" captures the anthemic qualities of past hits like "Express Yourself" and "Vogue." For years, Madonna has successfully articulated extreme poses (bitch, vixen, dominatrix). Now she's presenting more moderate positions with the same level of eloquence.

This is a fantastic CD!!! Loved it! It is so empowering while listening to it. It is very motivating for me, as I am going through a very tough divorce, lasting more than two years!! I play this CD when I am driving to court, it gives me the inspiration to fight and dance and relax!!! Love it! I also love Hard Candy and the DVD with that CD.

The sparsely produced first single, "Frozen", does not fit with the rest of the album. It is the song that takes the most listens to fully appreciate. However, now it has become one of those songs that I will never tire of. The fierce dance remixes are more immediately appealing. As for the sound of this digitally produced pop masterpiece, there is not an overall compressed sound that we seem to always hear on synth-pop recordings. The highs are sharp while not harsh and the bass will test the limits of your sub-woofer and is not boomy. While over compressed guitar sounds are used in abundance, they are used as just another instrument. There is unexpected space in this recording. Just for fun and contrast, give a listen to anything on Like A Virgin. It was one of the first all digital recordings and producer Nile Rodgers did not know yet how to best utilize the medium. It is one of the worst sounding records or CD's ever recorded. Overall this is the most satisfying and mature Madonna album yet. This is the Madonna album for people who do not like Madonna (yet). Ray Of Light proves the theory that everything does get better with time, even Madonna.

In the history of pop music there has not been an important female performer but Madonna. On her 8th studio album Madonna steps into the league of the Beatles, Pink Floyd, and Led Zeppelin. ''Ray of Light'' became her masterpiece. This album became her Sgt. Peppers, the Dark Side of the Moon and her Physical Graffiti. The album opens with the elegant ''Drowned World/Substitute for Love'' her most personal song since ''Promise to Try'' from the emotional album Like a Prayer. Her social consciousness catches up with her on tracks like ''Swim'' and ''Ray of Light''. The title track is a rollercoaster of disco and techno beats competing for eternal bliss. Her new found religion, Kabbala is one of her many influences on the album with tracks like ''Sky Fits Heaven'' and ''Shanti/Ashtangi'', the latter could have been on the Beatles Revolver album. Then there is ''Frozen'', a beautiful love song that had an incredible video. Madonna's motherhood is another haunting subject matter to this wonderful piece of work on the songs ''Little Star'' and ''Mer Girl''. She addresses her own daughter and the loss of her mother. ''Mer Girl'' is one of the most understated Madonna album tracks. Haunting and poetic, Anne Sexton set to music. If you do not have this groundbreaking album, add it to your collection. You won't be dissappointed.

Ever since I've heard "Ray of Light," I instantly fell in love with it. Madonna's approach to combine both ambient electronica and pop in this album proves to have amazing results! It's infectious as it is groundbreaking, in a pop sense. The layered production is fascinating and it proves that this is her most artistically successful album. I would like to say that all of the songs are equally amazing, but because it's so hard to pick favorite songs off a consistent album...I'd have to say they are: "Ray of Light," "Skin," "Nothing Really Matters," "Nothing Really Matters," "Sky Fits Heaven," "Frozen," and "The Power of Goodbye." Amazing album!

Ray of Light is nothing short of a musical masterpiece. It'll make you dance, it'll make you relax, it'll make you get excited on moment, and calm the next. It flows so well from song to song. An album winning 4 or so grammy's is a masterpiece...don't miss out!

At first I didn't wanted to by this album, because I thought Madonna couldend sing. But after I listend to it at the store I fell in love with it. this album is Madonna's best album, the songs are brilliant and have something that other Madonna songs don't have. My favorites are: ray of light, nothing realy matters, frozen, power of good-by and mer girl. And this album Madonna shows us that she can sing and that she is not a little girl anymore. This is Madonna's most mature album. So if you don't have is don't hesitate to buy it (like I did) but do it right away.

''Ray of Light'' contains a varity of music, each representing some aspect of Madonna's life. The album is very enjoyable because it contains up beat songs such as the title song ''Ray of Light'', relaxing songs such as ''Substitute for Love'', a song appropriate for singing a child to sleep,''Little Star'', and even a song in a different language, ''Om Shanti''. You can never get bored with such a varity of music. ''Ray of Light'' represents a drastic change in Madonna's life, motherhood, and gives you a slight inside look into how her life has changed, and what she has learned from her past mistakes. She describes how her view of life has changed and gives listeners a peek at this view, possibly giving listeners a new outlook on life.

This is by far Madonna's best work to date. After a hiatus from recording, Madonna returns with new sense of awareness on life. Brimming with spirituality and enlightenment, Madonna has ironically written the events that have recently shaped her life, which have also firmly placed her in the new age circles as a voice of interpretation. "Ray of Light" fits like a glove in the heightened spiritual awareness of our times. From the album's opening track to the title song and every song that follows, this CD shines with an extraordinary vision of it's own. The lyrics are beautiful and wax poetic, the techo and melodic sounds will shake your heart and move your soul, and her voice will send your ears soaring. Madonna has brought us a ray of light indeed.

Even after the release of ''Music'', ''Ray Of Light'' is still Madonnas BEST release ever! This LP got so much spirit and enlights my soul and mind over and over! Not just the fantastic sounds and voice is what makes this LP so special TO ME, but everything around it's developing process, too! Especially Madonna's biggest influence for ROL: Her babygirl Lola. I read and watched everything about the making of Ray Of Light so to me it's like a child you see grow up and attending every single stadium of it's development... To me, Ray Of Light will always be my all time favorite LP...

Madonna has changed a lot over the years but not as much as she has now. She's dropped her contriversual and sex songs for insperational and rebirth ones. I have never seen an artist like Madonna before and I don't think there will ever be another one like her. Madonna is truly a saint and has touched everyones lives in one way or another. Madonna is the coolest singer in the Universe and this CD proves it. Form the first to the last song she shines with glory. Frozen is one of her best songs along with Drowned World, Ray of Light, The Power of Goodbye, Shanti, Skin and all the others. Madonan is really an inspirational writer and she will be popular for years to come....I love you Madonna!!!!!
