I was talking with a friend about movies and asked him to name some of his favorite movies he mentioned Murder My Sweet, and some more by Raymond Chandler. I had never heard of him, though I had seen the movies and thought that they were ok. In the bio I found some good sttuff that Jerry my friend may not know and so I can score some points. I can leap from a complete ignoramus to a pretty savvy chump. Not bad. I found that Chandler's father was a drunk and eventually abandoned the family. The family was Anglo-Irish and as Protestants hated the Roman Catholics. Raymond wanted to be a lawer but his maternal uncle did not want to pay for the expensive schooling. So Raymond was sent to France and Germany to learn the commercial side of the language. When he took the civil service test he came in third out of 800. Smart guy. Fast forward, his novels are so past the pale with crime, drugs, violance, pimps, etc. that the Catholic censorship of movies castrates them. Thats a good expression. It reads well and easy and has excerpts from novels and letters and interviews. Really good. Thanks.
