William Willimon examines ten works of literature to trace the spiritual journey. That sentence may sound bland, but what an arc this journey takes! Willimon begins with the Odyssey and ends with Ron Hansen's Mariette in Ecstasy. Along the way he brings Walker Percy, Flannery O'Connor, Anne Tyler, and Fyodor Dostoevsky into the conversation. And Willimon's opinions encourage other opinions--my reading group had great fun with this book. We had read or were familiar with the titles, though Willimon provides enough of the story to provoke the reader, and our conversations about the spiritual influence and impact of literature held great interest to all. An excellent book for reading groups or adult classes needing to see from a different perspective!
