I have been a Fraser fan for years, have read (and reread) all of the Flashmans, plus many of his other works, including his much-loved The Pyrates. And I really wanted to like The Reavers. But I was terribly disappointed and ended up not even finishing the book. This was a faint echo of The Pyrates. Fraser's writing skills were certainly on display, but this book lacks the humorous tension that marked The Pyrates. I couldn't keep the main characters separated and the anachronistic humor that worked so well in The Pyrates was forced or contrived in The Reavers and fell flat. This book has the feel of a later work, perhaps done after he had proved all the things he needed to prove; a book he wrote because he could, not because it was a story he had to tell. The Pyrates and the early Flashmans crackle with energy, humor, and a breakneck pace. None of that energy is evident in The Reavers, at least not to me. To see Fraser at his best, dip into his early works. I would recommend giving The Reavers a miss, and that isn't easy to say, because I count myself one of Fraser's biggest fans.

Please lay off the high powered mind bending stuff when you are writing.
