Red Dragon [Original Motion Picture Soundtrack]

Based on the bestselling novel by Thomas Harris, this prequel to The Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal tells the story of ex-FBI agent Will Graham (Edward Norton), who comes out of retirement to assist in solving a grisly serial murder case. To find the killer (Ralph Fiennes), Graham enlists the assistance of the maniacal Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins, reprising his Oscar-winning role). For the haunting score, director Brett Ratner (Rush Hour) recruits composer Danny Elfman, (Batman, Edward Scissorhands), who's been scoring some of the darker Hollywood films for more than a decade. With the opening selection, "Logos," Elfman -- whose experience spans both orchestral music study and fronting the rock band Oingo Boingo -- immediately establishes Red Dragon's ominous mood with an otherworldly-sounding synthesizer, screeching violin, and solitary keyboard. "The Revelation" follows, its solitary timpani signaling the rising melodic tension as violins and violas are punctuated by brass before coming to an abrupt halt. "Main Title" again utilizes a web of synthesizer sounds set against violins and a full orchestra, as the tempo rises, abates, and rises again in twisting corridors of sound. Throughout the grandly sinister score, fragments of "Main Melody" recur, giving the music a hint of foreboding familiarity. Added features of this enhanced CD include interviews with Elfman, Ratner, and Hopkins, as well as the Red Dragon trailer, exclusive photos, and web links.
