Demons want to kill him. Dragons need to save him.
Red Dragon’s Keep, by award-winning author Natli VanDerWerken, is Book One in her fantasy series, The Dragon’s Children.
Mages, Demons, and a Dragon Talisman plague firstborn son and heir, Thomas Arach. Thomas wants desperately to earn his father’s respect. He’s been kept safe from danger all his life and he’s bitterly sure he’ll never be allowed to learn the arts of war.
Thomas is bullied by a squire in front of Lady Aeden, a warrior in her own right and trusted friend of Duke Arach. Lady Aeden and Thomas confront the bully where she reveals her magic for the first time. The bully is sent home in disgrace by Thomas’s father. The Duke planned on teaching Thomas the skills needed to run the duchy and fight in battle, but he’s run out of time.
A new Demon war is brewing. The King is calling up all reserves. Summoned to the palace for battle planning, the Duke and Duchess are ambushed and disappear. Demons are attacking outlying villages and holdings. Refugees stream toward Red Dragon’s Keep. Thomas’s cousins arrive, driven from their home at Falcon’s Spire by Demons.
Lady Aeden shows Thomas how to control the magic that he never knew he had. She, Captain Mathin, and seneschal Gregory, train Thomas in the use of weapons, strategy, and tactics. Thomas’s younger brother and sister are pulled into the training.
High Sorcerer Mannan, arch enemy of the Arachs, corrupts some of the most trusted inhabitants of the Keep. Squires conspire to kill Thomas. The cook almost does. They sabotage supplies, weaken the walls and gates of the Keep, and plan on poisoning the water.
Demons in the undercroft and a Sword of Light change everything.
Tales of Dragons who fought beside men have faded into legend. Archives tell of an amulet, part of an ancient talisman, a talisman that will call the Dragons back. Is one of the amulets hidden in the Dragon Tower?
Can Thomas learn the lessons of war, master the magic hidden in his blood, find the Dragon Amulet, and manage the defense of his family’s home before the Demons arrive? Will Dragons come to aid him?
Can he bring everything together to save Red Dragon’s Keep?
