Red Smith in LA Noir by David W. Jones

It's LA, a few years after the Second World War. Rhys "Red" Smith is treading water running a detective business. He doubled his staff when he hired the wonderful Katie Kellogg to run his office. Red is asked in on a case when a jar of diamonds turns up. Suddenly, people are being killed, and Red finds himself up against evil forces who don't consider losing as an option. The corruption is ugly, the torture is painful, and the romance will touch your heart.

About the Author

David W. Jones started life in Columbus, Ohio in 1940. His father left before he arrived. When David was seven, his mother and grandmother moved him to Hollywood. It wasn't until he was 22 that David finally met his father, who had spent some of his son's early years in the Pacific, fighting the Japanese from the deck of a destroyer.
David attended UCLA, took some time off, and got a degree in economics from LA State. In the early 60s, he went to Vietnam where he was involved in covert activities on behalf of the US government.
When he returned, David worked in the steel industry at his grandfather's company. David left steel to apprentice with a jeweler and subsequently bought the business. At one time he had 4,000 square feet and 12 people working for him.
He met Julie in 1981, and the two of them decided it was time for a change so they moved to Carmel. For the next almost two decades, David continued in the wholesale jewelry business. He frequently carried a gun, and there was one under his bed.
Julie says he's always been writing. There may be more books to pull out of his filing cabinet.
