Red Wolf (Shifters Unbound Series #10) by Jennifer Ashley

The New York Times bestselling author of Guardian’s Mate returns to the world of the Shifters and a tale of a new love under fire...

A man is only as strong…

Red wolf Shifter Dimitri has fought his whole life for respect. It is claimed that red wolves are tainted with coyote blood and therefore not pure. He may not be skilled at verbally defending himself, but because he's a bodyguard, tracker, and champion of the fight clubs, his fists are always ready for some rough and tumble. However, he’d prefer a roll in the hay with the woman who is his oldest friend.

…as the woman who’s got his back…

A spirited leopard Shifter and a fellow tracker, Jaycee Bordeaux has no problem forging a mate bond with Dimitri, but soon the two are called to infiltrate a rogue group bent on enslaving Shifters. Jaycee may have defended Dimitri from taunts before, but they now face a more lethal danger—one that threatens not only the future of their people, but also their love.

Each book is better and better! Every book so far has been great! More to come, and the wait is worth it. If you haven't started on the series, you need to start from the begining book. Awesome writing, flowing storyline, enough to keep you reading till the end, but leaves you wanting more!

I had a hard time getting into this one. They were already mate-claimed when it starts and they had a lot of starts and stops in the passion department and every time they turned it off like it was no big deal, which made it and them hard to believe. Also, they are best friends and have been for 20 years or so; and yet, they don’t know they love each other until much later into the book, and act surprised when they acknowledge it internally to themselves. I don’t get that. It was obvious from the start they loved each other, respected each other, depended on each other, wanted each other in their lives, yet they were unsure whether they loved each other?  It didn’t make sense. She also sometimes came across as if she teased him with the mate bond, strung him along and he was ok with that when we find out later he knew she was his mate of his heart from the moment they met 20 years ago.  It didn’t add up. I did like returning to New Orleans and to Jasmine’s haunted house. Loved every scene at the house. The excursion into Faerie was exciting and the conflict was good, I just didn’t like how the relationship developed. I think I would have much preferred if from page one they acknowledged their love and mate bond and went into the story already an established couple.

One of my favorite Shifters stories! This one made me so happy inside. Dimitri is a very uncommon red wolf shifter. He speaks with a stutter that he doesn't let bother him. Many judge him to by a coyote, seen by shifters as not so high on the alpha scale. His mate-claimed partner is Jaycee, a leopard, who understands his thoughts and speaks for him, or completes his sentences, always has his back. They are both elite trackers for their Alpha Kendrick. Kendrick is working with Dylan to find who is behind missing shifters and what's going on with the high-fae connection we discovered in the last few previous books. Dylan suspects the fae are gaining a battle-shifter army to take over the earth. The fae left our dimension ages ago while sifters, after gaining their independence, are here. Dimitri and Jace follow a lead to New Orleans and stay at Jasmine's sentient house there. Oh I just love this crazy house. It becomes a character in the story. Jennifer's characters worm their way into your heart and imagination. I grew to love Dimitri and Jasmine and was pulling for the strong and independent Jase to finally give in and accept Dimitri's mate bond. We spend time with Ben and find out what kind of creature he is. There are so many answers to series questions in this book. We also get to spend some more time with my favorites Zander and Tiger. I can't wait to see how Tiger plays into the future of this series. Now I get to dig into Midnight Wolf. Can't wait.

Red Wolf is gripping, exciting, nerve wracking, and had me falling more in love with this series. I relished this installment. Jaycee is strong, capable, and reluctant to accept the mate claim. Dimitri is strong, sexy, and has a stutter which only adds to his character. The reluctant's that Jaycee has was handled well and the stutter only added to Dimitri's unique character aspect. The romance is sweet and these two worked well together. I absolutely loved returning to the sentient house. We got a small taste of this unique house in Wild Things, so to come back and see more. It was fabulous. We also get to go to fairy and that aspect was exhilarating and the danger is heart stoping. Red Wolf was crafted together superbly and is a breathtaking addition. Rated: 4 Stars

Red Wolf is sort of a friends-to-lovers story. We met these two a couple books ago and saw their romance blossoming. Now, that’s not to say that you have to read the other book in order to read this one. In all honesty, it took some jogging of the memory for me to remember that I’d met these two before. It’s been a while since I read the book they were in and I have read many books since then. So, with that being said, you can read this book right from the get-go if you wanted to. Not only is this a paranormal romance but because of the whole crazy cult that Dimitri and Jaycee are trying to infiltrate, there’s some danger and mystery as well. There’s clearly something up with these shifters but you’re not overly sure what it is. Then when it hits you, you’re still kind of at a loss as to what’s going on. There’s just so much developing in this story that it kind of opens up a new story arc for all the characters of the Shifters Unbound series. A major conflict that I’m interested to see where it goes. One thing that I loved about the story was the house that Dimitri and Jaycee stay in while on their mission. It’s apparently a haunted house but I feel like it’s more magical than haunted. I wont lie, at first it was a bit scary and I wasn’t overly sure about the haunted house but then I kind of wanted them to stay and live there and keep the house company. I felt sad for the house. Yes, you read that correctly. I was upset for the house because I didn’t want it to be lonely. It’s weird, but true. You see the house wasn’t just a house, it was kind of like a secondary character. It protected them when they needed it, pushed them when they were being pigheaded, and was really a being in itself. I hope that we see that house in the following installments. Again, I know that’s weird but if you read this book you will understand where I’m coming from. All in all, Red Wolf was an enjoyable read. It stood on it’s own, added another element to the whole story arc, and we got to see some recently featured characters make a return. While it may not be my favorite thus far, it was still a great read.

Great addition to the series. An exciting house in NOLA and a trip into Faerie with packmates.

When a strong woman gives her heart it is a gift unlike any other. Red Wolf Shifter Dimitri has known since the day he met her that leopard Shifter Jaycee was the one for him. But they had to grow up and live a little before he can make his claim. That time is now. Now all he has to do is convince Jaycee that he won’t abuse he trust in him. It won’t be easy but nothing worth having is. And he is going to have to do it while on a job for their alpha and all kinds of other challenges. A terrific addition to the series.

RED WOLF is the tenth full-length installment in Jennifer Ashley’s contemporary, adult SHIFTERS UNBOUND paranormal/fantasy romance series. This is Lupine shifter Dimitri Kashnikov, and leopard shifter Jaycee Bordeaux’s story line. RED WOLF can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty but for cohesion and backstory I recommend reading the series in order as RED WOLF continues the latest arc of the series focusing on the impending war with the Fae. SOME BACKGROUND: Thousands of years in the past, the Fae created the shifters-a cross between beast and man-and in the ensuing time the Fae lost control and power over the battle creatures they had created for war. Approximately twenty years ago shifters were exposed to the human population. Out of fear, discrimination and specieism, the shifters were collared with Fae magic in the belief that it would control aggression; then they were forced into segregated communities known as Shiftertowns. There are several Shiftertowns located throughout America where shifters live in a relative but strained peace amongst their own kind. Told from dual third person points of view (Dimitri and Jaycee) RED WOLF follows lupine shifter Dimitri Kashnikov, and leopard shifter Jaycee Boudreaux as they are tasked by their leader Kendrick to infiltrate a suspected shifter alliance between the shifters and the Fae. Dimitri and Jaycee are two of Kendrick’s best and loyal trackers and they have been assigned to ferret out the shifter behind a series of missing shifters and a cult-like organization. What ensues is the strengthening relationship between Dimitri and Jaycee, and the struggle to gain control when magical forces are put into play. RED WOLF takes the reader into the land of the Fae where friends become foe, where enemies become the only chance for survival. The relationship between Dimitri and Jaycee has already been established but Jaycee has yet to accept Dimitri’s mate claim, and struggles with the idea of a happily ever after. Throughout the story Dimitri and Jaycee’s bond strengthens; there is no question about their love for one another. The $ex scenes are intimate, and mostly implied, without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language or text. There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including several previous story line couples and leads, as well as a new group of shifters, fae and the return of the ever present goblin. RED WOLF is a story with action, suspense, romance and magic. There are moments of betrayal and revenge; retaliation and battles; revelations, friendships, survival and love. The premise is engaging and electrifying; the characters are colorful, numerous and dynamic; the romance if passionate and fated. RED WOLF brings the shifters closer to war with the potential for an unexpected ally from the other side.

Dimitri and Jaycee are wolves in Kendrick’s pack; they are very close to their leader and valuable assets. They have grown up together, free and uncollared, as friends since their adolescence and then into the shifter version of adulthood. Dimitri is a rare red wolf who was orphaned at a young age as was Jaycee, who is a leopard shifter. They have a strong bond and since Dimitri mate-claimed his feisty, headstrong leopard in a previous book, that bond will become even stronger if she accepts his claim. Both are skilled trackers; they are sent by their leader and Dylan, the retired but very active head from the Austin shiftertown, to check out a group in New Orleans that may be working with the High Fae who seem intent on building an army of shifters to fight their way back to control of the human world. The Fae world and their connection to the shifters is greatly expanded in this book. We find out much more history about shifters, their control by the Fae as well as Fae politics, and what they are up to, both the High and Dark ones plus someone that even these arrogant, battling Fae fear and respect. This story is a good mix of Dimitri and Jaycee’s developing relationship interspersed with their undercover mission to find out who is friend or foe among the shifters. As this book is the tenth in the Shifter Unbound series, I am pleased to say it is still going strong. I enjoyed the intermixing of previously featured characters besides Dylan such as Zander, and Tiger. The shifters are a wild and crazy bunch who love a good fight as well as their mates with every fiber of their being, and a good rowdy party where their animal natures can come out to play. Fans of the series should find this one quite enjoyable.

Review: RED WOLF: A Shifters Unbound Novel by Jennifer Ashley Publication Date: May 2, 2017 Genre: Paranormal Romance Reviewed by: Reading in Pajamas/ Donna Rated 5 Stars I truly enjoyed this installment of the Shifters Unbound series. Jaycee was a strong, capable female without coming across as bitchy. Even her reluctance to accept the mate claim was handled well. (I tend to get frustrated at all the females refusing a relationship over and over.) I absolutely loved Dimitri. Sexy, strong and….with a stutter. That too was written so that it only added to his charm. They made such a charming pair, loyally covering each other’s back as things got weird. Sentient houses, fae and shifters all have a voice and I loved it. *Review copy provided by Penguin in exchange for an honest review. ~*~*~*~
