As Cook continues her historical family saga set in and around the Cornish fishing village of Portcowl, a year after the events in Leaving Shades (2010), Beth Tresaile settles comfortably into life with her fragile but contented mother and half-brother, Joe. Beth gradually forges a closer relationship with half-sister Evie as well. Although pleased that her childhood friend Kitty is returning for an extended visit, Beth is appalled to hear that Kitty’s married brother, Stuart, who was Beth’s former lover and the father of the child she miscarried, will also be visiting with his two children—and staying in Beth’s cottage! When Stuart’s estranged wife arrives, and the coarse and meddlesome Gabby Magor precipitates a scandal at the long-awaited Grand Tea Party, Beth must make some hard choices. Cook continues to develop themes of family and community, forgiveness and atonement in this more upbeat, although still emotionally fraught, sequel.
