About the Author

Nancy Northcott's childhood ambition was to grow up and become Wonder Woman. Around fourth grade, she realized it was too late to acquire Amazon genes, but she still loved comic books, science fiction, fantasy and YA romance. As a history major at Davidson College, she spent a summer studying Tudor and Stuart England at Oxford University.

Nancy became an attorney but eventually realized her internal super heroine needed more room to play. She left the legal profession to teach at the college level and to write freelance articles and novels, most recently blending her extensive knowledge of fantasy into her own stories. A sucker for fast action and wrenching emotion, Nancy combines the romance and high stakes she loves in her new contemporary mage series.

Married since 1987, she considers herself lucky to have found a man who not only enjoys a good adventure story but doesn't mind carrying home a suitcase full of research books. Nancy and her husband live in North Carolina and have one son, who also likes a good adventure story.

Nancy Northcott is a RWA Golden Heart finalist. Renegade is her debut novel.

Deep in the heart of Georgia, a woman fights against insurmountable odds. As Shire Reeve (sheriff) of the southeastern United States, Valeria Banning is charged with the protection of Mundanes (non-magical humans) in her district yet on this steamy summer night, it's Valeria who needs protection and there's no one in sight to come to her aid. Stuffed into the trunk of a car carrying her deeper into the murky swamp, her Mage powers are blocked by an amulet the ghouls have hung around her neck but she manages to shake it off and send out one last, frantic, magical plea for help, praying with everything in her that someone, somewhere will hear. Rather than ease readers into her story, Nancy Northcott plunges them straight into the heart of the action from the first page of this extraordinary tale. I was right there with Valeria as she struggles against the evil ghouls determined to drain her of her magic then either kill her or force her to mate to create more ghouls. With Northcott's vivid descriptions and superb writing, I could feel the sheen of perspiration from the dense Georgia humidity, smell the pungent aroma of the dense vegetation of the surrounding swamp, feel the pulse-pounding desperation as Valeria fights for her life, the soul-wrenching sadness as she realizes she has no hope of winning and the stunned realization that her rescue has come at the hands of her enemy - the man whose position as Shire Reeve she now holds - the man who ignites an unwanted flame of desire in her - the traitor she has taken a solemn oath to kill. A fugitive for the past six years, Griffin Dare has been tried in absentia, found guilty and condemned to death for joining forces with ghouls and murdering Mages. It's a long fall from grace for the once honorable Shire Reeve and those in the Mage community haven't forgotten the deep pain of his betrayal. But is Griffin really guilty or is he the fall guy for a much more powerful traitor? He may have spent the past six years living in hiding but he hasn't lost his honor or his dedication to helping others. After he realizes the woman he has rescued is the current Shire Reeve, he knows this is his opportunity to show her the evidence he has gathered and appeal to her sense of fairness and justice to work with him in uncovering the real traitor conspiring with ghouls to overtake the world. But first, he has to convince her not to kill him. I don't read a lot of fantasy and probably wouldn't have picked up this book had I not personally known the author. And you know what? I would have missed one of the best books I've read this year. The ancient magic and struggle between good and evil seamlessly woven into present day Georgia is fascinating and easy to believe. In fact, the magic (which is drawn from the earth's elements) is such an integral part of the characters that I easily accepted it as just one more facet of who they are; the world in which the story is told so expertly constructed that I had no difficulty imagining it. If you're looking for a fast-paced, action-packed story with ancient magic, pulse-pounding suspense and a deeply satisfying romance then I highly recommend you pick up a copy of Renegade by Nancy Northcott. ~PJ Ausdenmore The Romance Dish

This story sucked me in from the beginning, which is so important because I want to be invested in some way with the characters or the story by the end of the first chapter or two of a book. The magic was just right -- not too technical, not confusing, not contrary to the world as we know it, which is so important since it's placed in the here and now, not an alternate Earth. It was natural and easy to accept as it was described. Same for the ghouls, the bad guys of the book. There was just enough info to make them a believable part of the landscape and the world the author crafted within our familiar one. Too many authors put massive info dumps in about background, origins, etc, etc. I don't need to know all that, I just need to know enough to make them believable in the context of the story. And the characters. I love character driven fiction! You can give me the best story in the world, but if I don't like or connect with the main characters, I could give a rat's patootey about the story. Needless to say, I loved these characters. Flawed. Good, but not righteous. Moral, but not unbending or narrow-minded. They made me care. Loved, loved, loved the whole book. And I really can't wait to see what happens next.

This review was first posted at Reading Between the Wines! I've said this before, and I'll say it again. I love, love, LOVE it when I get to read a great new well built world. This book is just that. Set in a contemporary world, it has a beautifully hidden society of mages and magic that the world's mundane (non magic using individuals) population is oblivious to. The action starts right off the bat with this book, and there is a steady of stream of it throughout. The current Shire Reeve (Sheriff) of the Southeastern CollegiumValeria Banning, is caught by ghouls and ends up being saved by the ex-Shire Reeve of the Southeastern Collegium, Griffin Dare. This wouldn't be such a bad outcome, except for Griffin is a fugitive wanted for murder and treason. Doesn't that make a rescue awkward? Griffin Dare was framed, but he can't prove it yet. With the help of some of his friends in the Collegium he has been hiding these past years, waiting for the opportunity to prove his innocence and out the traitor who sits on the Collegium's council. So far, that opportunity hasn't come. That is until Valeria Banning drops into his lap. Now is his chance to pull in someone who could possibly help him prove his case. He just doesn't expect to fall for her along the way. Will Griffin and Valeria survive to prove Griffin's innocence, and see if they can build on whatever sparks between them, or will the ghouls kill them first? This was a great story that I highly recommend, and I can't wait to read the next book in the series that features one of Griffin's best friends. It's a four wine glass toast and I hope all of you enjoy this awesome new world!

Nancy Northcott's first novel of the Protector Series is fabulous. Renegade, very aptly named, is filled to the brim with action, suspense, and of course, sizzling chemistry between the hero and heroine. Griffin Dare has lived the last 6 years in exile from the mages' Council. The former shire reeve, or sheriff, stumbled upon a dark secret that led to the death of his closest friends, and important members of the council. Valeria Banning finds herself in circumstances that lead her to follow in Griffin's footsteps, and not only as the mage shire reeve. I've never read a story that focused on ghouls and never read about any ghouls sucking the energy out of a mage while injecting venom. I've always seen them in the shadows of vampires, with very minor and gruesome roles, so I enjoyed seeing a different version. Northcott does an excellent job of introducing me to this paranormal world and I'd love to see more! Her writing is clear and to the point so everything I need to know about Val and Griff's world right now, I'll know before the novel gets into the thick of action. It also seems as though mages and ghouls aren't the only creatures haunting the human world. With the following installments I hope that Northcott will not only continue on with the strenuous ghoul-mage relationship, but touch a bit more on the dark evils that appeared in Renegade. Renegade kept me on my toes as Griffin worked to bring Valeria over to his side. He believes there's a trader in the Council, but it's hard to convince someone who always plays by the rules. Even if he can't convince Val that he's innocent he still has others to watch out for. Griffin was an admirable character from his honor to his generosity. He cared for the homeless and kept the secrets of those who helped him during his exile. There's nothing better than reading about a character who thinks about more than 'number one' and inspires so many others to fight for justice. Valeria was just as awesome as Griff with her ability to fight for someone who may or may not be trustworthy all for the sake of justice. She had the genuine faith that I love to see in any heroine because it shows that they can see beyond their expectations and known reality. There was more suspicion and mystery than I expected; I was ready to read a novel that was literally page after page of fights and strategy and of course the perfectly timed steamy, romantic action! The balance of paranormal investigation, violence, and romance was spot on and I thoroughly enjoyed reading Griff and Val's story. I am quite impressed with Renegade and hope that in the sequel, Guardian, Northcott will dazzle again with an electric duo and action-packed plot! *eGalley provided in exchange for an honest review*

ABOUT THE BOOK: SHE FOLLOWS THE RULES As the Collegium council's top sheriff of the southeastern United States, Valeria Banning doesn't just take her job seriously, she takes it personally. So when a notorious traitor wanted by the authorities suddenly risks his life to save hers, she has to wonder why. HE BREAKS EVERY ONE OF THEM As a mage, Griffin is sworn to protect innocents from dark magic, which is how he finds himself fighting side by side with the beautiful Valeria Banning. But when the council finds out the two have been working together, they're both left running for their lives-from the law, the threat of a ghoul takeover, and a possible Collegium mole. REVIEW: This piece has originality written all over it. I was truly surprised at how different, yet how likeable it is. I haven’t read any of Nancy’s stories before but this is definitely a book that has put her in my sights and on my stalking list. The story is something no other author has come up with, or at least no one that I have seen. And I read. A lot. It has a paranormal aspect to it, but it isn’t something that overshadows the story. The romance is just enough and the steam that kicks up in this piece isn’t over the top. I liked the way Nancy brought these two together and found myself gripping the book for the next conflict. There were quite a few twists and turns in the plot and they are ones that I’m sure the reader will enjoy. I have this four and a half stars out of five for a job well done.

Reviewed by Aubrey Book provided by NetGalley for review Review originally posted at Romancing the Book I really liked this book. It was a lot different than the typical paranormal romance out right now. The writing was witty and fast paced. The banter back and forth between the main characters was interesting and kept me wanting more. I enjoyed the fact that the main characters of Griffin and Val hated each other but had a strong attraction. I really rooted for them from the beginning. The world build by Nancy Northcott is believable and new. I really loved reading a paranormal romance that was not centered around vampires or werewolves. Val is supposed to find Griffin and bring him in alive or dead for crimes he has committed. Val is a Shire Reeve and needs to protect the humans from ghouls. She is a mage that has fought against ghouls for years. Griffin has been on the run for the suspected killing of mages (mages are non-humans that have a lot of power and magic). Throughout the novel you see a progression of a romance happening between Val and Griffin. They both have to find themselves in a way. They both have to let go of resentments towards the other. Their romance is both sweet, hot and intense at the same time. I cannot wait to read more from this other and the next novel in the series.

Valeria Banning is a Sheriff in the Southeastern United States. She is dedicated to her job and is respected as one of the top in her field. During one raid her life is saved by a traitor who is wanted by the authorities. Valeria is curious as to why a man who was known as a traitor would risk sacrificing his life for hers. There is plenty of action in this book along with magic and a rather romantic love story. I found the book well written, the characters likable and cearly develpoed with an assortment of supporting characters. I look forward to reading more by this author. An awesome debut by this author!!

Northcott's urban fantasy romance is filled with interesting characters. I loved the interactions between Griffin and his friends. Ghouls made for new and unusual villains. I found the depiction of magic to be cliche, though; in a few places, it read like "insert special effects here!" I was also sorely disappointed that the big battle with the ghouls and Void demons never materialized. Still, this is a fun way to waste a few hours. Recommended if you need a non-taxing diversion.
