As a psychotherapist in private practice, I am constantly looking for inspiration when it comes to the daily process of supporting individuals and couples when they hit rough spots. I'm also on a perpetual journey to find new, effective, concrete tools that make a real difference for people in their relationships. I found both in Jeffrey Sumber's Renew Your Wows. There are moments in this book where it feels one is actually reading poetry, like the love poems of Rumi or Hafiz. For example: "There is a level of wholeness and completeness when we process some of the old, stuck places in our relational dynamic through a new lens and use new responses that generate the kind of change that brings us deep satisfaction, a feeling of connectedness, and yes, a state of joy." Then, the author, who is clearly a therapist himself, gives us step by step plans for moving through difficult places in our inevitable work together, reminding all of us in the process of healing and change that much of relationship comes down to personal responsibility and a distancing from making our sadnesses or longings about the other. This is the next great relationship book- the kind we therapists dole out to our clients when we need someone else in the room saying all the things we already know but hadn't quite articulated yet! This one will sit on my low shelf for a long while.
