Caribbean writer Wilson Harris is the central figure in this collection of essays, poetry, and prose fiction exploring the multivocal in opposition to Cartesian dualism and the creation of the "Other." Presented by Fazzini (English literature, U. of Ca' Foscari, Italy), the 20 contributions (including an interview with Harris himself) first explore the use of "Otherness" in Harris' fiction before turning to examples of similar literatures. The concluding ten essays expand the discussion to more diverse topics, including alterity in Edwin Morgan's science-fiction poems, singer Billy Bragg's engagement with signifiers of national identity, alterity in the Objectivist poetry of William Carlos Williams, "Creolizing" and "queering" in the works of Jamaica Kincaid, and gender and sexual identity in Scottish literature Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
