About the Author

Ted Wachtel is the president and founder of the IIRP. In 1977, Wachtel and his wife, Susan, founded the Community Service Foundation and Buxmont Academy, which operate schools, foster group homes and other programs in Pennsylvania — which employ restorative practices with delinquent and at-risk youth. Wachtel’s publications include Toughlove, the best-selling book for parents of troubled adolescents, Real Justice and the Conferencing Handbook, as well as numerous book chapters and journal articles. He has been a guest speaker at conferences on restorative practices around the world.

Terry O’Connell pioneered restorative justice in Australia, the United Kingdom and North America. He is responsible for the Real Justice model of restorative conferencing. A 30-year police veteran, he worked with Thames Valley Police service developing restorative practices in the U.K., including its use in police complaints/discipline systems. Terry now works across a range of family, community, institutional and workplace settings. He received the Order of Australia medal and was recently awarded an Honorary Doctorate from Catholic University in Sydney, Australia.

Ben Wachtel is director of communications and technology for the IIRP. He has worked with the IIRP since its inception and its sister organizations, Community Service Foundation and Buxmont Academy, since 1995. Ben served as a researcher on the Restorative Policing Experiment, a National Institute of Justice–funded study of the Bethlehem Police Department’s restorative justice conferencing program with juvenile offenders, completed in 1998.
