"He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake." Psalm 23:3, ESV
The house I live in and the church I worship in are each more than a century old, so I've seen a lot of construction and renovation work over the years. Though they are not living things, buildings are subjected to stress and wear and tear that can have serious consequences. Pipes may leak; ceilings may crack; floors may warp. I'm sure you could add your own house woes to the list. The problems may be because of natural causes or the result of neglect and abuse.
Our bodies also go through physical deterioration — as the natural result of aging, because of illnesses or accidents, or simply from not taking good care of ourselves.
More serious is what happens to our souls. We suffer when the devil attacks us with temptations, trials, lies, or persecution; when people hurt or mistreat us; or when we shift our focus away from God and stray from Him.
With regular maintenance and checkups — whether for our homes or our health — we can usually avoid the need to take drastic measures. We can't prevent every problem, but we can keep problems to a minimum if we're alert and disciplined.
With regular examination of our hearts in light of Scripture and with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we can avoid spiritual pitfalls and the devil's traps. Problems will still come our way, catching us off guard and threatening to destroy us; but our Shepherd who loves us, provides for us, and leads us also restores us. Better than any renovation job, better than any antibiotic, Jesus Christ can restore our souls and bring us back to a place of joy and peace
As you color in the doodles on the opposite page, meditate on the words "He restores my soul" and talk to God about areas of your life that need His healing touch.
"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:6-7
* * *
Several years ago, someone at my church shared a praise report about his mother's successful heart surgery, but because of his heavy accent, many of us thought he said that she'd had a "peacemaker" put in. Of course, he was referring to a pacemaker, but we all were suddenly struck by the wonderful significance of the term peacemaker.
What a great picture of coming to Christ for salvation! The Bible teaches that all have sinned and fallen short of God's glory. This means we are born with a nature that is inclined to rebel against God, and this keeps us from achieving the level of perfection that God's holiness demands. We are born with a spiritual heart disease that we cannot cure on our own. People try all kinds of remedies of their own — such as escapism, self-help books, or retail therapy — to deal with the symptoms and try to make their hearts feel better, but none of these actually brings about a cure.
The good news is that when we submit to God and allow Him to perform "open-heart surgery" on us, we are cured! Whether you think of it as bypass surgery or a heart transplant, God heals us. He removes the cancerous sin tumor or the plaque of sin blocking our spiritual arteries and restores us. And then He gives us the Peacemaker. When the Holy Spirit enters our lives, He helps our hearts work properly and gives us peace that "surpasses understanding" (ESV).
Do you have the Peacemaker in your life? If you have not yet had that life-changing experience of receiving Christ as your personal Savior, I pray that you will soon. In the accompanying illustration, write a prayer to God inside the heart, asking Him to forgive your sins and to become Lord of your life.

For the adult coloring book crowd, Restore My Soul is a delightful devotional/coloring book. The images have a wide range of detail – some, with little detail, are suitable for the beginner; other contain a great deal of detail and will be challenging enough for the practiced illustrator. Along with the art work is a nicely thought out, one-page devotional. For example, the devotional accompanying the above picture focuses on the history behind the song represented in the picture. The one disappointment with this book is that the devotional sits on the opposite page from the image, rather than on the back of the picture. This means that the picture cannot be used as a gift – without also giving out the unrelated devotional on back side of the picture. The book is best viewed as a personal devotional, not as a source of gifts to share with relatives or friends. With that in mind, this new coloring book will make a nice birthday or any other day gift for the artist in our family. ______________ This review is based on a free copy provided by the publisher for the purpose of creating this review. What a beautiful combination this book is! On the left page of the double page spread, there is a Bible verse and a devotional. One the right page, there is a beautiful coloring sheet that is themed to go along with the verse. My teenage daughter and I love to work on adult coloring books as a way to relax and spend time together. We both really like the pictures in this book. I am also using the book as a devotional, as intended, and so far the pages have really added to my quiet time. I highly recommend this book to those interested in adult coloring books that are also inspirational. I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Restore My Soul isn't just another adult coloring book. This volume is truly a cut above the rest. Whimsical designs surround careful chosen text, making each coloring page a true delight. Even more importantly, Ann-Margret's devotions introducing each coloring page are biblical, thoughtful, and the perfect way to prepare your mind to meditate on God's truths while you color. I've seen other coloring books advertise their "stress-relieving patterns," but if it's peace and relief you're looking for, there is no substitute for God's Word. With Restore My Soul, you get that. Pondering Scripture or praying while coloring Ann-Margret's pages is a restorative experience indeed! ~Jocelyn Green, author of Stories of Faith and Courage from the Home Front
Restore My Soul: A Coloring Book Devotional Journey by Ann-Margret Hovsepian is a new niche adult coloring book featuring beautiful geometric patterns and illustrations with spiritual devotions. Its hard to put this book in a category as it is equally a devotional book as well as a coloring book. With full pages of bible based devotions- each side by side with an detailed illustration, anyone can find time to relax and regenerate with this unique coloring book. Some of the coloring pages are geometric designs or repetitive patterns, while others are elaborate illustrations of flowers, plants and hearts. The art styles will appeal to a broad range of readers. Some of the pages are more of a time consuming challenge, while other coloring pages can be completed rather quickly. In the end, this book will make a nice keapsake for anyone to keep once it is completed in full color. Even after everypage is colored, the reader can return to it for its devotions. There are a few blank pages in the back for either your own art or journaling. The free space is an extra touch to allow personalization. This book would make a great inspirational book for anyone sick, and recovering from a prolonged illness who is need of an activity. Perfect as a gift or even for yourself- this is a memorable book. I Love Restore my Soul, (a coloring book Devotional Journey) written and illustrated by Ann-Margret Hovsepian! It is a Christian-themed coloring book with many two-paged themes, each displaying a full-page devotion and a full-page corresponding illustration to color. The pretty designs get my creative juices flowing, and the devotions are inspiring, making this book an edifying pastime. Introduction: In the beginning of the book is a quote from Pablo Picasso, “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up”, and a brief introduction describing how God designed us in His image, which means we all have creative and artistic potential. This coloring book’s purpose is to draw us closer to our creative selves, as well as restore our souls by drawing nearer to God. What a beautiful premise for a book! Craftsmanship: The softbound book has a smooth, glossy cover and sturdy white pages, without bleed-through to the backside. The drawings are on the right side of pages, and the verses and devotions are on the left side, so you aren’t coloring on the backside of any coloring pages (unless you decide to color the design boarding each devotion page.) Suggestions: Some adult coloring books require using only coloring pencils or gel pens, due to the intricate designs. Even though some of these pages are complex, there are many parts where using crayons are practical, too. Bonus: In the back of the book there are 6 coloring pages with a pretty border, but free from design, for you to draw and color your own designs. There is also an About the Author page, and a Coming Soon page, informing the reader of the next coloring book: Gratitude: A Prayer and Praise Coloring Journal. This book is a lovely way to spend unique, quiet time with God. I’m delighted to own it, and plan to frame some of these pages for colorful reminders to spend time in reflection. I received a review copy from the publisher.
RESTORE MY SOUL is an adult coloring book which includes a short devotional. it starts with a verse, then thoughts and an application and the picture has something to do with the devotional, like maybe flowers, or a compass, or other designs. My teenage daughter is enjoying this coloring book. Great addition for your adult coloring book collection, great item for a gift for your favorite senior citizen, elderly neighbor, or friend in the hospital or recuperating at home.
“Restore My Soul” by Ann-Margret Hovsepian is a lovely book filled with 40 short devotions and accompanying pages to color for those who enjoy the latest adult coloring craze. Hovsepian put this book together to encourage all of us who have been made in the image of our creative God to find our creativity while coming to a greater knowledge of God. Using Bible verses, meditations, prayers and coloring times, Hovsepian hopes to help the reader restore their soul and find refreshment. Opening each devotion with a Bible verse, she often includes personal snippets from her own life to illustrate (no pun intended) her point of the devotion. And her drawings are simply lovely — from more basic designs to extremely complicated patterns. Most drawings also contain some sort of text or verse that tie together the devotion and image. This is a great book to give you a quick but meaningful reminder of God’s love for us. And she always ties in her text with the drawing, allowing you to prayerful participate in your coloring experience. For example, at the end of the devotion accompanying the “be filled with joy” drawing, she writes, “As you color in the ‘water’ on the next page, ask God for what you need and let Him feel you with joy.” She also includes a few blank pages at the end of the book for those who want to try their hand at illustrating. This is a truly lovely book that you can come back to time and time again and have your soul restored. Five stars out of five. Thanks so much to Tyndale House Publishers for providing me with a complimentary copy of this book. This is a great book to read a devotion every day and color a great picture alone with it. For my first picture from this book I choose page 74 to read and page 75 to color. They go alone together and as you study you can relax with adult coloring. I used gel pens and double ended markers to do this picture. Will love to be able to use this book every day as it has 80 pages and then in the back it has 6 blank ones that you can draw or write your own
