Rethinking Madness: Towards a Paradigm Shift in Our Understanding and Treatment of Psychosis by Paris Williams

As the research continues to accumulate, we find that the mainstream understanding of schizophrenia and the other related psychotic disorders has lost virtually all credibility. We've learned that full recovery is not only possible, but may actually be the most common outcome given the right conditions. Furthermore, Dr. Paris Williams' own groundbreaking research, as mentioned in the New York Times, has shown that recovery often entails a profound positive transformation. In Rethinking Madness, Dr. Williams takes the reader step by step on a highly engaging journey of discovery, exploring how the mainstream understanding of schizophrenia has become so profoundly misguided, while crafting a much more accurate and hopeful vision. As this vision unfolds, we discover a deeper sense of appreciation for the profound wisdom and resilience that lies within all of our beings, even those we may think of as being deeply disturbed, while also coming to the unsettling realization of just how thin the boundary is between so called madness and so called sanity.

About the Author

In the midst of a successful career as a hang gliding instructor and competition pilot (winning a World Champion title and multiple National Champion titles), Paris Williams suddenly found himself plunged into a profound struggle with experiences that would have likely resulted in the diagnosis of a psychotic disorder. Fortunately, he managed to avoid becoming entangled within the psychiatric system, and he instead embarked upon a journey of healing and self discovery, attempting to resolve his own personal crisis while aspiring to support others going through similar crises. He has since spent many years exploring both Eastern and Western understandings of mind and consciousness, studying intensive meditation, becoming licensed as a clinical psychologist, working in numerous settings supporting people struggling with extreme states, and conducting a series of pioneering research studies at Saybrook University on recovery from schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders. Paris currently lives in New Zealand, working as a psychologist, writing and still occasionally taking to the sky. He can be reached at RethinkingMadness.com

What a relief to finally read what I have deeply believed for such a long time. I had read bits and pieces and experienced my own reality in regards to the deconstruction of our cognitive constructs, but this is the first time I have been able to see it all spoken to in one book. The foundation of the book are case studies of individuals who have experienced deep psychotic states, some for many years, and have recovered. The interviews with the participants gives a glimpse of the confusion, isolation and fear experienced while struggling within the current medical paradigm, societies beliefs around "schizophrenia" and the disconnection that can happen within families and friends while experiencing a "different" consensus reality. Williams observes the participants "process" through the lens of a number of current western and eastern models that attempt to explain "madness" then integrates them with his own model. William's model shines humanity, compassion, understanding and hope, onto a much needed area of human experience. If you are struggling yourself with unusual experiences or have family members or friends who are, this book can provide an anchor in the sea of uncertainty.
