At the end of the Civil War,two ex Confederate soldiers, Michael Carmody and Ben Hutchins, return to their homes on the banks of the Trinity River only to find a new type of war awaiting them. Along the way, they meet a man, Bryce Pomeroy, who leasds them on a journey back home where they encounter resentment, physical attacks, hostile Indians, oppressive Yankee occupation and a mutual romantic interest that threatens to tear the long time friends apart. To make matters worse, adjusting to family life becomes almost impossible as post traumatic stress and horrible nightmares plaugue the two young men. When their friend and mentor is caught up in a dangerous situstion, they are determined to rescue him and see to it justice is upheld in a land where law and justice is no longer in their control. But, just as they had when growing up together and fighting side by side during the war, they would again have to rely on each to make their return to Trinity a successful and meaningfull homecoming.
