Gr 4-6 Kelly Forrest's time travel adventure begins when she discovers that her family's new VCR can send her back in time. In the climax, Kelly is able to use the machine to save her friend Miri's grandfather from being shot in a hold-up. In between are adolescent debate about telling an adult the secret that Kelly, her twin brother Scott, and Miri share; lots of time travel experimentation; and a wonderfully funny conversation between Scott and his father about ethics and the value of a most unusual machine. This is light pre-teen reading, with little that is original in concept, characterization, or style. Nonetheless, adolescents will relate to the easy dialogue and the brother-sister competition that pervades the book, as well as the special relationship between Kelly and the spirited grandfather whom she rescues.
