Don't let anyone tell you the plot of a Dibdin book! I generally don't like contemporary fiction; all those artsy-cutesy touches that the critics praise are just bad writing to me. Dibdin has the all too rare ability to really pull these tricks off. One of his books left me stunned for a few moments, and then trying to think through all the plot twists to puzzle out what had really happened. Unlike most authors, he doesn't cheat: no coyly withheld information, no deus ex-machina, no gibberish posing as clever writing. I enjoyed the 2 Aurelio Zen novels that I've read, but the two non-series novels were just amazing!
