Thanks to his PBS television series Rick Steves is probably the best know travel writer and guide in the US. Any viewer of his television shows will be at home with this book, which is written in a style similar to the TV scripts. Rick Steves' France 2010 is arguably the best single guide to touring France, especially if you want to mingle with the local people or not spend a lot of money. I have found his recommendations of hotels and restaurants to be useful, and generally his descriptions of the sights are reliable. His reviews are opinionated in a way, but he actually recommends against staying or dining at some places, a refreshing change from many guidebooks. Rick Steves is also one of the few writers to explain how to reach the major sights by public transportation, which again is s useful option if you want to meet local people or save money. I have also found Rick's recommendations of local tour guides to be reliable. On the other hand, this book is not a comprehensive guide in the same sense as, say, the Frommer series. For example, Rick Steves does not recommend staying in Tours (the largest town in the Loire Valley, and therefore his book has no information at all on this major French city. If you are mixing vacation with a business trip and need to stay in Tours, then you will have to find another guide.
