Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
The answers to Lewis's rhyming riddles appear in Tilley's clever illustrations; PW praised their "disarming eccentricity." Ages 3-8. (Mar.)
Children's Literature - Armin A. Brott
"Every fall/this vegeta-ball/welcomes night/by candlelight." The clues to this and 27 more clever riddles are hidden in the text and intriguingly hinted at in accompanying illustrations. Younger kids will love exploring the pictures, while older kids might enjoy the challenge of trying to solve the riddles using only the text. And if the clues aren't enough, the answers are provided too. So what about that "vegeta-ball?" It's a pumpkin, of course.
Children's Literature - Mary Quattlebaum
Kids delighting in word play will relish Riddle-icious. J. Patrick Lewis's rhyming verses pose a riddle, with clues provided by Debbie Tilley's cartoon illustrations. Both amusing and thought provoking, the book may be used to encourage young readers to make up their own riddle poems.

K-Gr 4Riddles and rhymes blend perfectly in this giggle-inspiring collection of teasers. Lively text provides enticing verbal clues for deceptively simple objects, such as an elephant, a yo-yo, and freckles. Read aloud, the selections will be irresistible; many of the rhymes pack an auditory punch, with rumbling, hissing trains, and frogs that "ka-plink, ka-plunk." Cryptic cartoon illustrations match the humorous tone-just picture a sack-racing potato or an elephant-trunk squirt gun. The full-page watercolors contain just enough detail to invite lingering, even after the riddles have been solved (answers are printed backwards at the bottom of each page). Large print makes this a likely choice for the youngest readers or ideal for choral reading with a small group. Collections that offer such a winning combination of humor, child-oriented topics, and imaginative art are as rare as hen's teeth.Sarabeth Kalajian, Venice Public Library, FL
Kirkus Reviews
Lewis (Black Swan/White Crow, 1995, etc.) offers 28 "poems that hide/behind disguises" and "tickle you with/small surprises," each with a funny picture clue that makes most of the riddles easily guessed by preschoolers. There's plenty going on, in both text and pictures. For example, in the last riddle of the book, it's the night before Christmas, and not only are the creatures (a mouse and 13 cats) stirring, they're having a riot, playing catch with the Christmas balls, unraveling the stockings, and climbing the boughs upon which are superimposed words in the shape of a tree: I/stand/in water/and I needle/the cat. I get/spruced up in my/angel-hat. Tomorrow/morning there will be/something for you/un-/der-/neath me. Far superior to most riddle books in merit and for the visual humor in the colorful ink-and- watercolor illustrations.
