AudioBook Review: Stars: Overall 3 Narration 2 Story 3 Carissa Teodoro had everything, or so she thought: loving parents, a solid marriage and a little boy she dotes on. And then everything blew up: only her father is left for her family, her husband is a serial cheater and dumped her while she was pregnant with their son, and he’s got money to burn, just not for her or their boy – and she’s struggling to make ends meet and show her son all the love she can, even though she’s sharing custody with her ex. Nothing is quite what she hoped, and a flat tire just adds more to the mix. But the biker who appears to give her a hand looks familiar – Carson Steele (Joker) was the bad boy in high school, attracted to but never making a move on Carissa – she was pure and innocent and he was unwilling to bring her down with his dysfunctional family or issues. He’s got issues to burn, and staying away would be the smart thing – but also too much to resist. He’s falling for her, and wanting to see that she and her son have everything they need, and Chaos can help with that – but …. Like all of Ashley’s books, this one brings in several threads and people from all earlier books, revisits issues of past traumas and hurts, and gives us a ton of backstory on both characters, as well as adding in a threat that will force Joker to choose between what he wants and his past ills – it’s pretty standard romance stuff with the addition of a lovely sweet relationship wit Carissa and her little boy. At this point, I was hoping for a bit more content in the pages, while it was there, it took far too many words to get it out. Seventeen plus hours of everything but the relationship with Carissa and her little boy, and that she wasn’t a total pushover when silence or a ‘brushing off’ response was the only answer to her questions. She was the standout in this story, but the withholding of information from Joker at the start didn’t get nearly enough play. Yep – get it – you’re ashamed and concerned for her – but to lie (and omissions are lies) is just……. Narration is again provided by Kate Russell, and while I hoped for more and better – it wasn’t happening here. With a plot that felt familiar and a narration that, quite frankly, was wearing and didn’t encourage me to listen on, using emotion and variation in pitch, tone and delivery – this took much longer to listen to than other books of this length, and I can honestly say that I was happy when “The End” came. Sad, because there was more scope and potential here for actual emotive performance that reached the heights and depth of the tumult within both characters – and the twist and the ‘bad guys’ could have been less obvious to hear, but the narration here was exactly as I expected and not what I hoped. I can only say that the ‘spark’ I saw when first encountering this series with book four is attributable to my own lack of exposure to truly solid narrative performances. I received an AudioBook copy of the title from Hachette Audio for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review; all conclusions are my own responsibility.

Carson/Joker and Carissa are a little different from some of my favorite KA's leads. He isn't a super huge alpha, and she isn't in denial over being claimed by him. He's really sweet. (Not to be confused with wimpy since he is an underground fighting champion, but he's more patient and less bossy.) She's willing to go after what she wants (read as, she pursues him). As a child, Carson was abandoned by his mother and abused by his father. He dreams of working in car design and Carissa. Some around him see his potential for greatest, but he mostly sees himself as a looser. He moves on to a be a member of Chaos and does well working in their custom garage. Although her parents loved her, Carissa didn't have the perfect home life and background either. It's been filled with hardships and deaths. She was one of the in/popular crowd in school, but now she finds herself divorced with a baby and barely scraping by. When these two meet again years later, there's no denying the spark between them is still there. Both have many issues, yet so much to give. Parts of their lives were emotional for me. It may be because I am a single mother, but I shed a few tears while reading. Carissa's ex comes from a mega rich and powerful family so he calls most of the shots with their son. I felt so sad for her. Carson is exceptional with her baby which melted me into a pile of I-love-Carson-mush. It gave me heart pains and made me fall deeply for him. Awesomely, a lot of KA's characters from other books make appearances. Such a total treat! Also, the war that has been brewing with Valenzuela continues. Chaos is growing and changing. Major story is packed into this book. It has several aspects including strength, redemption and family. I loved the entire novel, and I cannot wait for the next installment.

I thought Ride Steady would be your typical high school princess shacking up with the bad-boy from the wrong side of the tracks. However, that’s not what this story was at all. In fact, even though Carissa was little miss popular in school, she gained that status because of who her boyfriend was. She got married to said boyfriend, got pregnant, and then found herself and her child homeless when he kicked her out of his life to make room for his mistress. To say she’s down on her luck is an understatement. Meanwhile, we have Joker who did not grow up in a loving home. His mom left him when he was still a baby, his father beat him profusely, and his only form of escape was to go to one of his two neighbors houses or to go to the town’s motorcycle club’s garage and draw in his sketch book. Except one night he’s had enough of his father’s beatings, fights back, and takes off. Now, almost a decade later, he’s back in town, now part of the brotherhood of the motorcycle club he’d long to be part of, and has a chance encounter with the popular girl who had stolen his attention all those years ago. I have to be honest, I read the first book in the series and it just wasn’t my thing. I could not get into it for some reason and was unable to connect with the characters. However, Ride Steady had something about it that made me give it a try, and I’m glad I did. This isn’t really a second chance romance. It’s not even a good girl meets bad-boy romance. I mean, Carissa is divorced, fighting tooth and nail to keep her son from her ex-husband who’s using his family’s name to drag Carissa through the mud and take full custody of their son. She’s broke, living in a crappy apartment in a shady neighborhood, and she is just barely scraping by. So, she’s clearly not the clean and crisp good-girl that you imagine when you think of a motorcycle club romance. Joker had a rough upbringing which has ultimately shaped him into the man he is today. He doesn’t take crap from anyone. No one messes with him because no one knows how lethal he is. He keeps to himself and doesn’t let anyone in. However, when he stops along the interstate to help a mother and her child who are stranded on the side of the highway with a flat tire, things shift. Standing before him is the girl who stole his heart all those years ago, except she doesn’t recognize him. Even when she shows up later at the garage to thank him for his help and to drop her vehicle off to be fixed, he tries to keep her at a distance. But, she manages to weasel her way into his life and pretty soon you start to see some major changes with Joker. He goes from this dark and broody character to a guy who picks up her kid, let’s him tug on his hair and beard, and doesn’t say a word about it. Seeing that change in him really pulls on your heartstrings when you know how much he’s endured in life. Carissa was a good balance to Joker’s darkness. He nicknames her “Butterfly” due to the outfit she wore when she came by the shop on the first day to thank him. She was all pink, frilly, and girly with butterflies on her outfit. Even though life was clearly knocking her down at the time, she took the time to dress up and do something nice for someone else because they had done something nice for her. She was one of those characters that would give you the shirt off her back. She was very kind and gentle and she was perfect for Joker. Plus, Joker was perfect for her. He didn’t balk at her kid, the fact that her ex-husband was

I almost stopped reading this series after book two, it just seemed more like an easy love story with a hint of action, some heated disagreements followed by love scenes, not alot of depth or roles for the supporting characters, too mushy, not enough "spice" and just too "pg" for lack of a better description. But im SO HAPPY I stuck with this series. This one was finally what i love in a good book it had a fantastic love story, depth to the characters, great supporting characters that were actually in this book and played major roles, and some good bad guys that also have depth to them. I could not put this one down. Its definitely not your typical action packed biker book but this one sold me on wanting to read more in the series. I really want to read more about rush.
