Heartbroken, Haylie is only looking for a few hours of pure bliss. But hockey hero Cam wants more than a hook-up. His goal? Ice-melting romance.
Haylie Keene wants to put the past behind her and move on after her jock boyfriend cheats on her. Her friends convince her that a hook-up (or maybe a little revenge sex) is the best place to start. Except she’s steering clear of hockey players, as in, never ever again.
Alaska State all-star defenseman Cam Erickson is a calculated risk taker. He weighs the pros and cons and knows Haylie is a bad investment on so many levels, but something about her gets under his skin. And once he makes up his mind, he pulls out all the stops to make her his.
Haylie soon realizes that Cam’s quiet charm and unfaltering confidence is like a magnet she doesn’t want to refuse. Their chemistry is undeniable and maybe the rules she set up for herself are worth reconsidering.

Rebecca Thomas takes the reader on a journey of healing in The Right Kind of mistake. Haylie is trying to mend a broken heart and assuage her wounded pride after a breakup that leaves her wary of athletes. I received a copy of this story in exchange for an honest review. A disappointing read. It felt unfinished and kept faltering. Could have been one book in my opinion. This story of empowerment fell a little short for me. Have to wait and see what the second half brings.
Arc for an honest review: What a sizzling start! I haven’t read many NA books, so I was taken by surprise, and a little flustered, feeling quite the same as the MC, Haylie did, wrestling with her mind, in a tug of war with her heart over dating any more hockey players. Ever. After the last one, Tyler deserted her to follow his dream, even though she followed him to Alaska to attend the same University. The sacrifice she’s made, and continues to make, being off limits to any hockey players, tests her resolve. But it’s ok because she isn’t looking for a boyfriend. She wants to try being a little daring, adventurous, wild. She throws herself at Cam, also on the hockey team, and sidekick once to Tyler. “Retaliation sex” That’s her reasoning. She convinces herself she can do it—after only ever have one serious boyfriend, she was finished with being good. But she struggles with this idea too. There’s quite a bit of suspense in Haylie’s wrestling with her doubts. She tries to find a reason—aside from crippling desire—to be with Cam again. He confesses he’s always pined away for her and has actually waited for her. And he’s unlike anybody she’s ever met before. Trust me, he’s pretty damn sexy, and his patience endearing. Haylie’s two best friends help her along, which is good because I wanted to do what BFF Maya tried to do—and help her to not make the mistake of losing someone really special because of her jaded self-talk. But Cam does one hell of a job convincing her to give him a shot because he isn’t looking for a fling, he’s waited too long for her. Haylie soon discovers more about herself as her heart opens, her latent artistic talents, that she just may decide to put to good use. I look forward to seeing how Cam and Haylie’s relationship develops. See what else Haylie discovers about herself—her multiple talents and her dreams. It’s time for Haylie to live! Without her ex-boyfriend telling her how to think or to feel—she’s ready to break down every invisible wall! Go Haylie! Please know this is part one of two, and by the end of The Right Kind of Mistake, the build up's percolating very nicely.
I really enjoyed this one. The only bad part for me is the fact that it's not a complete story. Part 2 comes out in March. The story is very good, great writing, and the characters will grab your heart. Haylie finds herself at school in Alaska after she followed her hockey playing boyfriend there. Now that she's found out not only is he a cheat but he's left school to play in the NHL, she vows never to date another hockey player. Right now she's just looking for a little fun. Cam Erickson has always liked Haylie and now she's free of her useless boyfriend. Only problem is she's just looking for a little fun and a bit of revenge and Cam is looking for much, much more. Can't wait to read how this one wraps up. I recommend this one.
Brilliant NA romance certainly heats up in Alaska! This is the first novella in a two part New Adult romance series and a definitely different, but still totally enjoyable, style for this author. Haylie Keene followed her boyfriend of three years to study in Alaska so he could follow his dream to play hockey in the state team whilst studying, then he cheats on her. Haylie is heartbroken but now determined to put the past behind her - and to avoid romance with ice hockey players in future. Her resolve, however, is severely tested by Cam Ericsson, a defensive player in the same Alaska state hockey team. He’s totally different in his attitude and behaviour to her ex and the attraction between them has been simmering for years. Should she have revenge sex with him? Will he be the safe option for her? Can he break down her barriers to let him have a chance? This is a brilliantly written novella, with great characters, emotive descriptions and plenty of turmoil. As with all of this author’s writing, the story flows, the actions and reactions seem totally believable as if you’re actually involved and there. Cam is the dream boyfriend - kind, considerate, determined, loving, sexy, etc, etc! He also has other talents besides playing hockey (you’ll have to read it yourself to find out how he got his nickname). I was rooting for him throughout the story, just hoping Haylie has the sense to grab and keep him while she has the opportunity to do so! This is a brilliant new direction for this author and she totally rocks it. I thoroughly enjoyed this and can’t wait to read the second part asap - I very highly recommend this! Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley, too, for letting me read an ARC of this book in exchange for this, an honest review.
Right Kind of Mistake by Rebecca Thomas scores a perfect goal. I absolutely loved this book, I could not put it down. The characters felt like friends, Cam is a hot sweet Hockey player and Hailey is a beautiful woman with a big heartache from previous boyfriend. This book has everything you want in a romance story, revenge, sweet romantic sex, hook ups and some hot sex. I would highly recommend reading this one. Rebecca is such an amazing author and taking on this new genre was a perfect score for her. I am hoping there are more to come. I was given an ARC in this book, for my honest review.
