Sergeant Amy Galloway lost her best friend, Brenda, in Afghanistan, and one year later, she has come to Tribute, TX, to see about Brenda's husband and daughters. To make sure they're all right. She is not prepared for the pull the three little girls, not to mention their father, have on her heart. Amy has never had a home, or a serious relationship. When she realizes how much she wants to belong here, in this town, with this family, she panics and tries to run. But there's just one little problem. The Army dropped the ball, and the Bronze Star for Brenda, for saving not only Amy's life, but the lives of three other soldiers as well, has never been awarded. This cannot stand!
So Amy digs in her heels and gets things moving on that front, and the next thing she knows, she's got an apartment in town and a job running Riley's construction office! Oh, well, what will it hurt if she just stays until after Christmas, only a few weeks away?
It doesn't hurt at all. Staying merely ties her closer and closer to Riley Sinclair and his beautiful daughters. Dear heavens, she's in love with Riley! When she realizes that he feels the same about her, she starts to believe that maybe she really can have a home and a family, even if the home and family in question once belonged to the sergeant who saved her life one day on a hot desert road halfway around the world.
