Ring Around a Rosy: Action Rhymes

Ring Around a Rosy: Action Rhymes

by Jenny Williams

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
PreS About a dozen well-chosen familiar nursery rhymes appear in each of these books. One rhyme with illustrations appears on each page or spreads across two pages. The verses are familiar except for ``The Farmer's in His Den'' instead of ``The Farmer in the Dell,'' which appears in Ring Around a Rosy. Both Here's a Ball for Baby and Ring Around a Rosy include verses suitable for fingerplays and action rhymes. Counting rhymes such as ``The Animals Went in Two by Two'' comprise One, Two, Buckle My Shoe. Ride a Cockhorse features animal rhymes such as ``Hey, Diddle, Diddle'' and ``Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear.'' From endpaper to endpaper, Williams packs an interesting variety of illustrations into a small format, using watercolors highlighted with fine markers. About a third of the illustrations employ rollicking characters to suggest how to participate in the rhymes. The style, especially the expressions on the children's faces, resembles that of Shirley Hughes for her ``Alfie'' series (Lothrop). Good building blocks for eliciting participation and for sharing nursery rhymes. Jean Gaffney, Dayton and Montgomery County Public Library, Ohio
