Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Keri Collins Lewis
Beginning in 1918, Robert Ripley thrilled readers of the New York Globe with cartoons of the most extraordinary true stories and discoveries he found during his travels around the globe. In 1933 he opened a museum in Chicago, and the popularity of the objects, photos, and facts collected (by Ripley and later by museum curators) led to thirty additional museums. After an introductory explanation of Ripley's history, the book is organized into six chapters with an extensive index. Chapter titles are: World Exclusive, Mighty Mankind, Wild Life, Science Class, Just Done It, and Performing Art. Pages are laid out like magazines, with a heavy emphasis on photos with explanatory captions. From a pink dolphin to art created with the dust in vacuum cleaner bags, each page brings readers an over-the-top snapshot of something surprising, interesting, or mind-boggling. Some events are shocking in their deliberateness, such as an escape artist who chained himself to the top of an SUV that then drove through an automatic carwash while he made his escape, but not before the hot wax cycle. Others are frightening accidents, such as a woman who survived a plane crash in the Peruvian rainforest and though she could not see without her glasses, she felt her way downstream until she was rescued nine days later. Kids of all ages will be fascinated by the vivid photographs, fun facts, and fast pace of the book. This edition includes a holographic cover. Reviewer: Keri Collins Lewis
