In Sam's world there are two rules. Rule #1: Nobody dies. Protect the living at all costs. Rule #2: Everybody dies. At least once.

The Waking was a global event in which a force called the Lifeblood invaded all humans who died. The few strong enough to control it came back as powerful immortals. The rest letthe bloodlust take over and awoke with one goal - to kill.

Newly appointed Watch Guard Samantha Shields has a legacy to uphold. Her father died a hero defending their city and now she wants to follow in his footsteps. Except for the dying part, of course. Unfortunately, fate has other plans as she discovers deep dark secrets that make her choose between her loyalties and the lives of everyone in her city. Both rules are in play as Sam is forced to make hard decisions that could cost her everything – including the person she cares about most.

Overall Assessment: I was pleasantly surprised by this book. It wasn’t your typical “zombie” story-line, which I appreciated. I was also surprised at the f/f romance. Not in a bad way, but just an ‘oh, ok then’ kind of way. Just a head’s up for those of you who need it. I will definitely be picking up the sequel, as this ended on a pretty big cliffhanger. I’m excited to see what happens to Sam. What I liked: – A fresh take on Zombies. These are not your slow-moving, ‘BRAAAAINNNSS’, mindless flesh-eaters. – A hardcore female lead. Sam is not someone to mess with. She doesn’t let other people fight her battles, but still shows emotion at appropriate times, making her more likable and relate able. – An action-packed book from cover to cover (more on why is is also a con below). What I didn’t: – It felt rushed. While the almost constant action kept me engaged, it left little time for character development. I didn’t get as much of a connection to Sam and David as I really wanted. It also made other character’s deaths less meaningful. – This isn’t really a strike against the book, but I wish it would have been longer! I’m hoping the next book includes more insight into each character’s heads to fill the void.

Rise of the Chosen (Lifeblood, #1) by Anna Kopp An addictive young adult series in the making. This Beginning book Rise of the Chose shows a new mythology to the rise of a zombie nation. People are coming back to life after death, but not all things are as they seem. The Woken are those who died who come back in an irrationally violent and Zombie like fashion. They are stronger and difficult to kill, only solved by beheading and burning. Another from of the returned are the Chosen, in most cases they are reasonable, but detached from their previous lives. Sometimes this detachment is cause by the institution. The world has become sparsely populated, the Lifeblood cotangent is an unknown source and reason. Death has become something as a crisis for societies in the remnants of humanity. Not only death from without with rogue Woken, but those within, your own population could attack you if they by various means and purposes die. This has created a militaristic society, to protect the population and subvert the threat of Lifeblood and the reanimation of the dead. The personal relationships of the survivors is what will bring the audience to this series.

Thank you to Adam Mawer, DigiWriting, NetGalley, and Blue Moon Publishers for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for review! Rise of the Chosen follows Sam Shields, the daughter of Brand Shields who is a well-known hero that died defending the city of Savannah from Woken. As a new member of the Watch Guard, Sam wants nothing more than to follow in her father's footsteps, minus the dying part. On her second day of Watch duty, Sam discovers secrets that the Watch Guard has been keeping from the people they've sworn to protect. Now Sam has to decide where her loyalties lie and just how far she's willing to go to protect those she loves. I absolutely flew through this book! It was a very nice, quick read that I ended up enjoying more than I initially thought I would. This takes the zombie genre and turns it on its head with the Woken and the Chosen. Woken make up about 99% of the dead and their only desire is to kill. They have enhanced strength and are nearly immortal, but of course can be killed by beheading. Woken are easy to spot because the mysterious Lifeblood shows in both their eyes and their veins, causing them to glow red. Chosen are different in that they are incredibly rare (only about 1 in 1000 deaths) and while the Lifeblood still flows through them, it's much more faded compared to the Woken. Also, Chosen retain their humanity and instead of red glowing eyes, their eyes are the same color that they were as humans but they glow. The Chosen are used in the Watch Guard as a member of a three person group that helps control the Woken killings throughout the city. This is such a different take on the traditional zombie story and I really liked how the author took the time to give the definitions at the beginning of the book to help the reader understand everything. I normally don't enjoy reading fast-paced books, but I think Rise of the Chosen was a book that wouldn't have made sense as a slower-paced book. It wasn't the highlight of my reading, unfortunately, but I understood why it had to move faster than I would have liked. In a situation like the one Sam is in, things wouldn't move at a snails pace. With people dying almost daily, whether by choice or not, it would be unrealistic to imagine that the lives of everyone in that situation would go at a slow or normal pace. While things are not at an apocalyptic level and society is still attempting to function as it used to, the fact that Woken and Chosen exist makes things different, and therefore makes living different. I can't say this enough but this was such a unique twist on the genre and it really stood out as something I haven't seen before and something I really enjoyed. Sam as a character was a lot of fun to read about. She goes through quite a lot in this book, and it's all in the course of maybe three days. Everything she knows to be true is turned upside down and she has to quickly adapt to her new situation. Not only is she strong, but she's also smart, and very dedicated to keeping those she loves safe. I liked that there was some LGBT representation in this book with Sam and Lena, and it really made this book stand out even more. Their relationship was absolutely adorable and I was so happy with how things went between the two of them! STORY LINE RISE OF THE CHOSEN: Set in post-apocalyptic Savannah, after a world-wide phenomena, Rise Of The Chosen is an exciting and intriguing roller coaster ride. When the dead started rising, some wanted to call them zombie. However, the zombie of fiction mindlessly ate its kill. Know as The Woken, they are not zombies but just plain mindless super killers of the worst sort. The second type of undead, the Chosen, are rare. The Chosen have the super abilities of the Woken, but still have their humanity. To form a workable society and protect humans, society formed a group called the Watch. The Watch consist of teams containing 2 humans and 1 Chosen, given the responsible of protecting the living, and beheading the Woken. Closing off the cities, the Watch guards the humans and keeps peace. Meanwhile, not all are happy with this arrangement, and covert groups form to fight the Watch and the Chosen. Watch team mates, human Julian and Chosen David, found themselves teamed with newbie Sam. Her father was a great fighter in the Watch until his heroic death. Sam will have decisions to make, some will effective not only her life, but the world. Secrets revealed, mysteries uncovered, and inhumane practiced will come to light. How will Sam handle what is coming? Is the world on the edge of total destruction? Can Sam and David save their world? Or is this the beginning of the end for humanity? Grab your favorite beverage, relax, and enjoy this thrilling novel. CHARACTERS, PLOTTING, AND DEVELOPMENT: First, I must say, Rise Of The Chosen is riveting, fast paced, and will entertain the reader for hours. I found myself unable to put this book down and read it in one sitting. The plots keep coming as Ms. Kopp developes her story and includes several surprise revelations. The pace never slows as the author wove the many threads together to form an exciting and different book. Author Anna Kopp's writing style is clear and easy to read, and the story-line unique. Ms. Kopp created many layered and interesting characters. I found myself wanting to know more and more about Sam and David. With a unique story-line, Ms. Kopp created creatures that were very different from the standard zombie. Of course, she also included as hero's the Chosen and Sam. Ms. Kopp left hints that Sam is different and I can't wait for her to reveal the secrets in book two. Also, in this first book of series, we received hints of what the Chosen will become in future books. The Rise Of The Chosen does have a cliff hanger ending in some respects. I can't wait to see what Ms. Kopp has in store for book two. THE RISE OF THE CHOSEN, RECOMMENDATION: STARS 4 In conclusion, I found The Rise Of The Chosen, a well-written solid book. With a fast pace and well- developed characters, I would not hesitate to buy this book for myself or a friend. Therefore, I gave The Rise Of The Chosen 4 well deserved stars. Ms. Kopp created a unique interesting story which will hold the attention of anyone who enjoys sci-fi, fantasy, or dystopian novels. Finally, I received an ARC from the Netgalley and chose to review the book. Books reviews of any novel are dependent on the book review author’s opinion. Consequently, book reviews on line under my name are my opinion.
