So, this is written in a format where each chapter follows a different main character. I thought I would hate it, but I was wrong. It's really well written, and you really feel for each of the characters...and you are meeting people on both sides of the war, to the point that you can't even root for one side or the other because there are compelling sympathetic characters on each side. It was long, but it didn't FEEL long. I can't wait to read the next book in the series to see how each character continues to develop. Really great world-building and character development!
