Reviewed by Divine Zape for Readers' Favorite In Risen: The Battle for Darracia Book III, Michael Phillip Cash creates a complex and sophisticated setting in a planet that is almost devastated by war, and weaves a gritty tale of a people fighting impossible challenges to return to a life of normalcy. With the king and everyone in power missing, the land is ruled by ruthless leaders who abuse the people in many ways. Can V’sair outwit his captors and return to offer his people the leadership they need in these troubled times? Cash has created a story with a conflict of magnificent proportions and this conflict is so skillfully managed. From the social ills resulting from war, to the corruption of power, to the long conflict between the Darracians and the Quyroos, the author builds the tension, and he does it quickly, immersing the reader in the story. This satisfying conclusion to the saga is a thrilling mix of suspense, thriller, and fantasy, a story that follows a cast of compelling characters — the young king V'sair, the Quyroos high priestess Tulani, and the king’s brother and warrior Zayden. The characters are well-crafted and their backstory adds to the richness of their three-dimensional nature. The writing itself is crisp and has a magic of its own, highly imaginative and evocative, with excellent world-building. I was pulled in from the very beginning of the story with the descriptive power of the prose. Risen: The Battle for Darracia Book III is written to an electrifying speed, a page-turner that is filled with action and twists that make the plot unpredictable. It’s hard to love everything in a book, but I did with this one.
We last saw our heroes scattered, seriously injured and lost. Lothen is now in control of the planet, the people have either been murdered or turned into slaves. Everything looks lost, broken, and people have given up on everything. V’sair is going to have to learn the true meaning of being a leader to save his people. Zayden, he may be injured and drowning in his defeat, but can he find his true self and save those he cares about? This is a dark story and a perfect end to this series. All hope is gone, there are no more fighters for the people. The people are dead, broken, slaves, and have no hope. They don’t even have enough to want to join together to fight for. But when everything is gone, that is when you either let it defeat you or you pick yourself up and find a way to keep fighting. I love how Zayden, at his lowest learns that his disability is not the end of the world. And V’sair, although lost under the sea grows to be a great leader. This is a great story and an amazing series. If you are looking for a great series look no further. This series has everything in it from love to loss and good to evil. Make sure to get your copy today. I received all three books (Schism, Collide, and Risen individually and as the Battle for Darracia Collection) for free from the author in exchange for an honest review.
The author has done an excellent job of bringing everything to fruition the way it should be. Each of the characters are forced to face themselves and the adversity they face. They must find a way to overcome that adversity if they are to save themselves, their people, and the issues they fought so hard for. We see things come full circle. The author made sure we saw how flawed each of the characters were. This is what made them so realistic to us. I’m not sure many of my middle school students would enjoy this series. It is maybe a little too mature for them. However, I have a friend who teaches at the high school level. I am sure she and her friends would definitely enjoy this series and so it will be sent her way. I can think of nothing better to do than to share a series when you find one you really think is top notch. I definitely feel that way about this book. I received a copy to help facilitate my review. The opinions expressed here are my own.
The third book, Risen, of the Michael Philip Cash's new series, The Battle for Darracia, has been released for all the Darracian fans out there. Once again readers have the opportunity to enter into a surreal, richly developed futuristic world complete with its own religion, social norms and castes as well as political intrigue. This final book leaves the reader with a moral lesson that will stick for years to come. Beginning with the first word of the first novel in the Battle for Darracia series, Cash captures the hungry reader's attention with an explicit description of a surreal alien planet whose shores "were fine black sand dotted with purple sea glass.... a shooting cosmic spray spread across the inky darkness..." (page 2), as well as its mysterious indigenous "silver crabs". It is clear that the author put a great deal of thought and research in creating an entirely new fantasy world right from scratch. Rivaling the depth and imagination of Tolkein's and C.S. Lewis' beloved fantasy worlds, Cash creates a futuristic, sci-fi reality with the same level of imaginative development as Tolkien's middle earth world. This series transports the reader into a new futuristic fantasy world. No detail is too insignificant for Cash in his visual description of a surreal and futuristic world with its futuristic landscape. The significance of its ancient religion in society and political upheaval and class wars transcends time and space- representing common elements of society that all readers will relate to. This richly developed world will appeal to history and political enthusiasts as well as fantasy and science fiction fans. The title itself is symbolic -with its dual meaning, referring not only to a cosmic event, but a socio-political event as well. From the first page to the last, the reader gets the unexpected. The unique ending of Collision, leaves the reader impatient to find out what happens to V'Sair in the third book, Risen. Cash does not disappoint the reader, This epic story's backdrop is original. This is a new world the reader will become immersed in like adapting to a new culture. Yet the themes are universal- coming of age and the quest for identity themes and the pursuit of purpose present a story line that readers of all ages can relate to. The eerie unfamiliar setting is set side by side with ordinary and universal ideas. Cash creates a series that sociologists, historians, scientists as well as fantasy enthusiasts will enjoy dissecting and analyzing. Fans of the ever popular StarWars, Battlestar Galactica and Star Trek series will enjoy the well developed characters as well as appreciate the intergalactic quest for peace and purpose and royal intrigue. Parallel elements found in this series are reminiscent of a combination of elements drawn from popular science fiction so that readers will feel right at home with Cash's story. It is ironic that a horror and mystery writer can cross into the fantasy genre with such ease. The same talent used in developing three dimensional characters and their personal struggles as well as interpersonal relationships found in Cash's earlier works is evident in this fantasy novel as well. At first glance this may seem like a quick read but from the very first chapter it becomes clear that the reader has entered a new world. As a reader I found myself immersed with Cash's lively description and vivid writing style. I recommend this as a good series for any young adult or science fiction fan. As a blogger I received this series of books published by Red Feather publishers for the purpose of writing this review.
This is the third and final book in this YA series. These books should be read in order as this is a continuing saga. The first two are: Schism-The Battle for Darracia Collision-The Battle for Darracia What a wonderful finale to this series! Not only is there plenty of action but there are also lots of lessons being taught as well which adults as well as teens should learn. One is disabilities are only disabilities if you allow them to be and never under estimate the other senses we were born with. Another and perhaps the most important is that all people are the same whether they are red, blue or green. Adversity, even the worst kind can be overcome when we all come together as one. Peace on this planet shall reign supreme when we realize that not only is there a connection between the earth, air and water-there is a connection between us all.
