When it comes to training K-9 patrol dogs, Yardley Summers always trusts her instincts. But when it comes to dating men, she keeps her heart on a very short leash. Mostly, she’s too busy with her four-legged trainees at Harmonie Kennels to commit to a relationship. Only two men have managed to distract her: a handsome Doctors Without Borders physician who’s suddenly gone missing—and the red-hot dog trainer from her past who’s suddenly back in her life…

Now a K-9 rescue team leader, Kye McGarren has never forgotten the days he trained at Yardley’s camp—or the nights he spent in her arms. When he hears that Yardley is on a mission to find the missing doctor, Kye is determined to keep her out of danger. With his K-9 partner by his side, he joins Yardley on a death-defying mission—one that reignites their mutual passion. Will Kye be able to rescue his romantic rival…without losing the woman he loves?

Rival Forces is the fourth installment of D. D. Ayres' K-9 Rescue series.

Ayres has definitely climbed on my “must read” list with this phenomenal series. I’m relishing each and every novel in the K-9 Rescue series which gives us a touch of danger, loyal canine companions, fierce heroines, and tantalizing heroes. Rival Forces is book four in the series. It does read well enough as a standalone, but Yardley is featured in the other novels and we get to see a little of who she is and what might be going on, before we dive into her book, so this one I'd recommend reading after you started from the beginning. I enjoyed Yardley and Kye together. They have a past history, one that needs to be resolved, but first he’s got to figure out whats going on with her and avoid the danger that has come calling. The chemistry and attraction just flowed off them and the pages. They both love dogs and are involved with working and handling them. Both are strong-willed, stubborn, kickass and take no prisoners. It makes for an interesting pair up. Boy oh boy do the sparks fly. I will say we get a very enchanting dance that happens (he’s from Hawaii), oh my, that part had me glued to the page. The suspense was nicely done and brought all kinds of unknown danger. It keeps you turning those pages to find out what will happen next and it gave us a chance to see both dogs do their thing. I really enjoyed how each dog was trained for something different and how well they worked together, just like their owners. This series is outstanding. I’m in love! I had a phenomenal time reading Rival Forces and the second chance romance was a delight. Rated: 4 Stars

Yardley Summers is the best when it comes to training K-9 patrol dogs, she is known far and wide and some adore her and some not so much. Yard is a private person, keeps her emotions in check and her instincts is what she trusts the most. But when it comes to men and love, she is unsure of herself because her life has always revolved around the dogs she trains at Harmonie Kennels and she doesn't have time for relationships. Yardley tried giving her heart to a trainer 12 years ago but he left and now she's trying again with a doctor who's suddenly gone missing. But in walks the man from her past to help find her missing boyfriend. Kye McGarren is a K-9 SAR team leader and part owner of BARKS. Kye is tired of the cold and snow and is ready to return to his beloved Hawaii. He gets a call from a brother in arms and wants him to help his sister, who turns out to be the woman he can't seem to forget, Yardley Summers. Kye is determined to help her find her missing doctor and keep her out of danger whether she likes it or not and she doesn't! Yardley and Kye join forces with their dogs in tow on a dangerous mission that could mean someone dies. This mission ignites the smoldering passion between them, answers some questions and brings love back to the equation. Can Kye rescue her doctor, his rival, and get a second chance at finding love with her?

Yardley Summers has played a part in every book in this series so far. AS the owner of K9 training facility, I was glad to see her get a story all her own. When her current boyfriend goes missing, her brother, Law, asks his friend to check on Yardley and help. Kye McGarren and Yardley have a past that Law isn’t aware of and it makes it a little awkward for him to help her find her missing beau. But, he does and is reminded of why he fell for the headstrong, fierce, beautiful, and loyal Yardley. Their pairing is unconventional and intense, but it works and it works well. As in the other books, the dogs feature prominently within the story. Unlike the other books, I wasn’t as bothered by it this time around. Lily, a troller that works with Kye, and Oleg, a Czech wolfdog in the care of Yardley, are the stars of the story and I cared more about them than the main human characters. Because of their different breeds, I went and researched what each one would look like as I was reading and then pictured them strongly in my mind. I love when I can connect with a character, or characters in this instance, and want to know more about them other than what is told within the story. Yes, they are the dogs and yes, they aren’t the main focus of the story. But, I was prepared for that this time around and enjoyed it so much more knowing that the humans weren’t the only “stars” of the book. Overall, I have to stay that this is one of my favorite books within the series. I went into it prepared to fall for the canine characters and did just that. Along the way, the human storyline entertained me and kept me on my toes wanting to know more about them, as well. *Copy provided for review.

Book 4 was great and Kye was a great character. I like Yardley from the previous book but when you add Kye it was a great combination with of course the dogs. Wonderful story, suspense, great romance, humor, great dogs and two main characters that have history and spice. This series just gets better with each book and I always look forward to the next book.

A fantastic addition to this series! Yardley Summers is a strong independent woman succeeding in a male dominated field. Her love life has been the subject of much speculation. She had finally allowed herself to start caring for someone when he disappeared. Now a ghost from her past has shown up to help her find the guy who may be her future. This book is more intimate tan the others in the series I think because of the smaller cast and because of the amount of time these characters spend in their heads. I really like Yardley and was thrilled she got her happy.

✦REVIEW: Rival Forces: A K-9 Rescue Novel by D. D. Ayres http://wp.me/p3d0RZ-4ZZ Publication Date: May 3, 2016 Genre: Romantic Suspense/ Contemporary Romance Reviewed by: Reading in Pajamas/ Donna Rated: 4.5 Stars I have grown to love the K-9 Rescue series and this book is another indication why. The action flows so well into the romance that you don’t feel a break in the momentum. Kye is a hot Hawaiian that is a cross between The Rock and a surfer dude. What a combination! Even though I didn’t warm up to Yardley as much as I did him, she was so realistic in how she dealt with everything swirling around her. In looking back at the story, one would think there was too much going on but it all seemed to work together to make it a fast exciting read. I loved it. *Review copy provided by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

LOVED this book! The whole series is great, with each book being an entire stand alone novel that can be read on its own. In this book, Yard finally has a chance at love - she is the tough owner of an elite dog training school that never shows weakness. In this novel, we learn why she is so tough when someone from her past comes back to see her. He is the one that got away, but she doesn't know what to do with him now. He also owns an elite dog business and always travels with his search and rescue dog, a toller. Yard has made some enemies along the way with people that she didn't believe were suited to work with dogs. Add in some questionable romantic choices and, when she starts getting threats, she doesn't know where they're coming from. Fortunately, Kae comes to visit as things start to get frightening. I was unfamiliar with the toller breed, so was fascinated by the author's description of the dog crying and screaming in a way that sounded human. At the end of the book, the author provided a link to actually see and hear tollers screaming. Trust me, it is worth a click. Wow, I never would have thought a dog could sound like that. This is a great romantic suspense novel that fans of the genre will love.

Rival Forces by D. D. Ayres was one of those books that I could not put down. Yardley Summers is a strong and independent woman who has struggled most of her life to be accepted - first by her father and then by nationwide law enforcement communities as one of the top K-9 dog trainers in the United States. She works hard and doesn't allow her heart to get involved with any man for the last several years. I liked her but her stubborness often left me a little frustrated. Kye McGarren met Yardley several years ago while training at her father's K-9 training camp. He moved on after being threatened by Yardley's father but has never forgotten her. He co-owns a Search and Rescue operation now and travels the world with is K-9 partner, Lily. He won my heart because he accepted his own limitations within certain situations but never once gave up trying to protect Yardley. Ms. Ayres characters are complex and the action is non-stop. Danger, a second-chance romance, K-9 partners with their own personalities and a fast paced plot that never slowed down made this one a perfect romantic suspense for me. I was given an ARC from St. Martin's via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. The opinions expressed in this review are strictly my own.

What a splendid story! I was drawn in, kept engaged and thoroughly entertained from beginning to end. Kye McGarren was a man described so well that I could see him. I felt he was believable and oh so very wonderful as a book boyfriend. He was someone a person could depend on. If you happened to be the woman he set his sights on then I believe you would be very happy and well satisfied. He was the whole package. Yardley Summers was a strong independent woman running a large business training K-9’s for various jobs. The man she thinks she is in love with has disappeared and she is worried. Her brother sends one of his friends, Kye, to keep an eye on her, help her find her boyfriend or do whatever it takes to keep her safe. Yardley and Kye had a short intense relationship in the past and are given a second chance at a happily ever after. The chemistry is still there but with good and bad guys showing up, men with harm in their eyes prowling about, dogs to care for, injuries to tend and so much going on their HEA is not going to be easy. I loved the dogs! The links at the end of the story to the Toller bark/scream and the male hula were educational and oh so very interesting. I had to look up what Oleg looked like and a Czech Wolfdog is fierce but regal looking – what a great dog to star in this book with Lily the Toller. I am eager to read the rest of the books in the series and can’t wait to find out who will have their story told next! Thank you so much to NetGalley and Saint Martin’s Press for the free copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review. 4.5 Stars

Boring except for Oleg and Lily.
