Shin Buddhism was the first type of Buddhism introduced to America and remains one of the largest groups. However, many people are unaware of this beautiful tradition, which, unlike the monastically-derived Theravada, Zen, and Tibetan Vajrayana, is an entirely lay-oriented Buddhism. As Tai Unno shows in clear, personable language, Shin Buddhism aims to awaken the ordinary person in their everyday life, incorporating spouses, children, jobs, chores, taxes, and all of life into the proces of unfolding enlightenment. This book is intellectually rigorous, spiritually penetrating, and informed by a deep trust in the power of Buddhism to help ever the most confused, ignorant people. I highly recommend it to everyone with an interest in Buddhism.

Some in the West dismiss Pure Land Buddhism both as a perversion of Buddhism and, in its Shin form, as too familiar in its doctrine of faith, uninteresting in either case. Unno's book is a gentle but powerful corrective, giving Shin Buddhism its rightful place in Mahayana thought and in human experience.
