Overview

River by Skyla Dawn Cameron

Defiant, nocturnal, moody–though River sounds like a typical teenager, she’s anything but. River’s a werewolf.

The life of an alpha female wolf was irrevocably changed the night she was attacked and bitten, and awoke confused, alone, and human. Three years later, thrust into a world where she doesn’t belong and living in foster care, River barely tolerates humanity and still doesn’t know who bit her or why.

But River isn’t as alone as she previously thought; someone’s been watching her, someone who holds the answers she’s been seeking. And though the human who changed her seems to be a step ahead of her at every turn, River is determined to beat his game and return to her pack and mate.

As if being stuck in a world she hates, with a life she never asked for, and faced with a destiny she doesn’t want wasn’t bad enough, River still must find a way to survive every human’s greatest challenge: high school.

About the Author

Award-winning author Skyla Dawn Cameron has been writing approximately forever. Her early storytelling days were spent acting out strange horror/fairy tales with the help of her many dolls, and little has changed except that she now keeps those stories on paper. She signed her first book contract at age twenty-one for River, a unique werewolf tale, which was released to critical and reader praise alike and won her the 2007 EPPIE Award for Best Fantasy. She now has multiple series on the go to keep her busy, which is great for her attention deficit disorder. Skyla is a fifth generation crazy cat lady who lives in southern Ontario, where she dabbles in art, is an avid gamer, and watches Buffy reruns. If she ever becomes a grownup, she wants to run her own pub, as well as become world dictator. You can visit her on the web at www.skyladawncameron.com. When she’s not writing or being glared at by cats, she’s probably on Twitter. You should ping @skyladawn and tell her to get back to work.

One of THE BEST werewolf books I've ever read. It tells the story of a wolf turned into a human. River is a flawed but loveable heroine and all of the other characters are very well drawn. Brilliant book and I hope the sequel will be out soon.

Skyla Dawn Cameron is one of the best writers in the area of science fiction that I have seen so far. I don't normally like this genre, but I love her books and her serials. Her stories like River, Children of the Apocalypse, as well as Curio Killed the Cat, and Catharsis are great stories and will always keep you on the edge of your seat. Her writing style is so unique and you can hardly ever guess what is going to happen next (which I love). You should definitely check out her website and read her stuff which you can find at pretty much any book store. She posts these great serials online which is available to read for free, but don't be cheap throw in a donation if you really like her stuff, which I'm sure you will. Where else are you going to find a great read for free?

I got this book because it sounded interesting and it is very interesting and River is a book I find that I will read over and over and still enjoy it each time I read it.

The first 200 pages were an amazing book: a well-developed, unique protagonist with a consistent and honest personality. Cameron avoided the teen fic lust-angst trope and redeemed all of River's failings with a steadfast loyalty for her pack. Unfortunately, the final few pages trod over this roughshod, and furthermore failed to resolve a single one of the subplots facing River at school, home or threatening her pack. Basically, this is 2/3 of a wonderful, award-winning novel tacked on to a rushed, formulaic ending that didn't even feel like the same author. Despite the final disappointment, for the price this is a great buy. I'd love to see the sequel in ebook format as well!
