Road Rock, Vol. 1: Friends & Relatives

If you've never experienced the irresistible force of Neil Young in concert, this sprawling, gloriously messy document is as close an approximation as you'll ever get -- aside from the fact that you'll be able to forego the earplugs during the more over-the-top moments. Road Rock doesn't mess around with the essential viscera of Young's live show: Songs are presented at their full length -- "Cowgirl in the Sand," for instance, goes through more than 18 minutes of hypnotic ebb and flow -- with no superfluous studio sweetening to be heard. Although not quite as inherently brutal as Crazy Horse, Young's backing band here -- which includes kindred spirits Duck Dunn, Spooner Oldham, and Jim Keltner -- aren't shy about laying open tracks like "Words" (which turns into a spooky waltz worthy of a Death Valley roadhouse) or the still-chilling "Tonight's the Night." Not one to be shy about sharing the spotlight, Young closes the album by dividing the spotlight in three, staking out his own patch while duetting with Chrissie Hynde on a piercing rendition of Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower." Road Rock stands as proof that -- in the words of another Zimmy classic -- a portion of rock's fringe will be forever Young.

The other reviewer is right; NY marches to his own drum. Why he didn't make this a double CD is mystifying. Surely the concerts were more than eight songs long. Tonight's The Night gets its third live outing here. The disc has no unifying theme other than its mere existence. The sound isn't even that great. Buy any other Neil Young live album before you purchase this set.

This album of live tracks contains 8 songs...the first of which clocks in at 18 minutes! The structure of most of the songs is: Solo, Verse1, Verse2, Solo, Solo, Solo, Solo, Solo, Solo, Solo, Solo, Solo, Big Bang to end song. Neil, who ever marches to the beat of his own drum, makes a bad decision here. I believe it's just a matter of time before some driver sues Neil for putting him to sleep while driving, forcing a road accident. I can see it now. "But Judge, Neil's long drawn-out solos where putting me to sleep, I couldn't help but plow into the oncoming traffic." Road Rock, indeed. For die hardest Neil Young fans ONLY. They should have that on a warning label on the front of the disk.
