Having read Robert Service's poems for years I wanted to know more about his life. This biography is well-written and paced to hold my interest. It's informative and where the author lacks details, she states as such. Robert Service was a rock-star in his day. Back when writing was appreciated and poetry especially was respected, Service was at the top of his game. I won't get into whether Service's work was high art or not- I enjoy it and so do/did millions of others. There's nothing quite like camping in the deep snow in the middle of winter, the sun has already gone down and before you duck into bed for the long dark winter night- someone either recites or reads a copy of The Cremation of Sam McGee and suddenly you're transported to the icy cold Yukon and you can imagine yourself nearly freezing to death. Great fun.
