Overview

CRI (Composers Recordings Incorporated) is a non-profit label whose mission is to maintain a continuing survey of American classical composition as well as present worthy music of the past. This 1992 release presents three concertos for diverse instruments, all composed within the preceding six years. In all cases, they are played by the soloist for which they were written: Janos Starker in Robert Starer's Cello Concerto, Walter Trampler in Richard Wernick's Viola Concerto ("Do not go gentle…") and Blanca Uribe in Richard Wilson's Piano Concerto. The orchestra is the Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra of Boston conducted by Leon Botstein, who conducted the premieres of the last two of the works. The soloists' performances are all excellent. The writer found the tonal work by Starer and the colorfully imaginative work by Wernick to be more interesting than the twelve-tone Wilson concerto, but found that Uribe's playing was dramatic and powerful, even though the emotional point of the piece remained elusive. All three works were written to be premiered by a soloist and a chamber orchestra. Nevertheless the writer thought the Starer Cello Concerto wanted a somewhat larger group. In all three works there were instances of tonal insecurity in the orchestral playing. The sound is good, though a little dry sounding.
