One of the building blocks of Western civilization, the Roman Empire spanned centuries and continents and many of its inventions and achievements can still be found throughout the world today. This introduction to the Roman Empire and the people who lived within it is very basic and provides only rudimentary information. The contents are divided into several subjects, from Roman Rulers to Sickness and Health, and provide interesting facts as well as black and white and color illustrations. In each subject category a trivia box gives interesting facts about the subject being discussed. Included toward the end of the text are a table of brief Roman facts, Roman words, two Roman projects, and an index. Only two Internet sites are given for additional information, but no sources are provided. While this does provide many interesting facts about the Romans, it should in no way be considered an adequate resource for Roman History. Part of the "Strange Histories" series. 2003, Raintree, Ages 7 to 9.
