- String Quartet No. 2 in A minor, Op. 51/2
The Jerusalem Quartet has released most of its critically praised recordings on the Harmonia Mundi label since 2004, and three of its most representative discs have been reissued in this slip-covered set. The recordings of chamber works by Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann, and Johannes Brahms are not restricted to string quartets, for Schumann's "Piano Quartet in E flat major" and the "Piano Quintet in E flat major," featuring pianist Alexander Melnikov, and Brahms' "Clarinet Quintet in B minor" with clarinetist Sharon Kam, are included in its repertoire. However, newcomers to the group should first acquaint themselves with its sound in Schubert's "String Quartet No. 12 in C minor, Quartettsatz," and the "String Quartet No. 14 in D minor, Death and the Maiden," to get a feeling for the qualities of the individual players and the ways they communicate with each other. Hearing these quartets and Brahms' "String Quartet No. 2 in A minor" first is great preparation for appreciating the interactions with Melnikov and Kam. These lively performances are well worth exploring, and even though they are reissues, the music is still quite fresh.
