Children's Literature - Kris Sauer
Sportscaster, movie star, governor, President of the United States—Ronald Reagan truly was a man larger than life. In this graphic novel, readers in grades three to five learn about America's 40th President from his boyhood in Illinois to the honors his country bestowed on him following his death in 2004. In between, readers will learn about every stage of his life, from Reagan's early career as a movie star to his first efforts to get elected. As he moved onto the national stage, the book follows his two presidential campaigns, highlighting both the successes—appointing the first woman to the U.S. Supreme Court, end of the Cold War—and some of the controversial (Iran-Contra arms sales, increasing the national debt) aspects of his two terms as President of the United States. Readers who may normally find biographies dull and boring will no doubt be drawn to the simple text and cartoon-like drawings of key persons and events during Reagan's tenure. Featuring a table of contents and complemented by a timeline, glossary, and index, this is a good non-fiction text that will likely pull in many a reluctant or slow reader. While neither source notes nor a bibliography are included, the author instead chose to include a fast facts page highlighting who served in Reagan's Cabinet and a page describing the Office of the President from who is eligible to run to the President's current salary.
