This book isn't for the casual reader who has no interest in history. If, however, you enjoy reading on American, British or political history, this book is indeed outstanding. For me it was both an excellent non-fiction book illuminating a little known period of history and a thoroughly enjoyable summer read. Full bibliography and text notes as well as a smooth writing style made this book well worth picking up.
This book is really unusual. It's an extremely interesting historical view of an entire era as seen through the eyes of leading characters of the times. It's backed up by tons of scholarly source notes, BUT--it's really entertaining and fun to read. What a winner!
--a great story!
My book just arrived and I have been devouring it ever since. Being 23, I did not grow up during President Roosevelt and King George¿s time and so I never knew the real story behind the King & Queen¿s relationship with our president. Along with historical information, the author included anecdotal stories of great importance which document how close of a relationship our 2 nation¿s leaders shared. The writing style is fantastic and actually places the reader in a position to feel they have experienced the history as if it were occurring in the present. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in history, whether it be of Presidents, Royalty, or History. It is absolutely fascinating and well researched and just plain enjoyable.
THE ROOSEVELTS AND THE ROYALS is an inspirational biography of the fascinating relationship of four of history's more recent 'players': Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt and King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. It reads like a captivating novel yet is solidly based on throrough, academic research. The author achieves a wonderful balance of personal and enchanting stories like the hot dog picnic at Hyde Park with the important and unique roles each of these people played in national and international events. Will Swift has done an outstanding job of capturing both the nuances and the big picture of an entire era that these leaders presided over.
