Overview

The Root Cellar by Janet Lunn

It looked like an ordinary root cellar, the kind of place where Rose's Aunt Nan would store her canned goods and winter vegetables. And if twelve-year-old Rose hadn't been so unhappy in her new life--an orphan from New York, packed off to live with unknown relatives in a ramshackle farmhouse in Canada--she probably would never have fled down the stairs to the root cellar in the first place. And if she hadn't, she would not have climbed up into another century, the world of the 1860s.

This is an outstanding book in many ways. It encompasses a wide range of topics and does a fine job of blending the history of the 1860s into a truly enjoyable read. The character growth is commendable as the story takes shape around Rose, who desperately tries to find her place in the world. The details of the historical events are rich and descriptive. This is a book for young adults and is highly recommended. The only issues I have with the story are the somewhat contrived and convenient time travel scenarios. If you can get past the plausibility issues this is a definite must read.

I thought the Root Cellar was a wonderful tale about a girl that just didn't know how to fit in. She needed friends, and that's the gift the cellar gave her. It made her realize what was really important to her in her heart. I also felt as if I were travelling alongside Rose and Susan throughout the story. I give this book FOUR Stars it was really great!!

This was a nice book but it didn't keep you on the edge of your seat and it didn't have enough romance for me. The characters were believable but it's kind of a boring book.
