No, the Samoan-born Katina brothers haven't turned in a collection of island fare. Known for blending urban, hip-hop, pop, and R&B styles, the Katinas address all of their diverse musical influences on Roots. This projects gets off to an uncharacteristically slick start, with opening tracks "Are you Ready," "Freedom," and "Come Back to Love" bearing a glossy pop sound and smooth -- some might say bland -- sensibility. But it's in the spare strains of "Faithfully" that Roots finds its emotional core. Featuring Tommy Sims (co-writer of Eric Clapton's hit "Change the World"), the beautiful vocal performance and layered production resonates with restrained power as the song delivers its message of love and thanksgiving. Though Roots heads in a decidedly more adult-pop direction than previous efforts, there's still plenty to delight here.
